Chicago: Daley calls for new state laws on guns

Richard Daley proposes gun bills to state lawmakers - chicagotribune.com

Mayor wants new laws to restrict sales and stiffen penalties for criminals who use guns
    By Hal Dardick, Tribune reporter

Flanked by several parents who had lost children to gun violence, Mayor Richard Daley on Monday called for new laws to restrict gun sales and stiffen penalties for criminals who use them.

Although Daley announces new gun-control initiatives every year, this year's announcement took on added significance because the U.S. Supreme Court is weighing whether to overturn the city's handgun ban.

"The aggressiveness of the gun advocates is just one reason it's more important than ever that we work for common-sense gun laws focused on stopping the flow of illegal guns into our communities and keeping the guns out of the hands of the criminals," Daley said, standing next to tables loaded with weapons confiscated by Chicago police.

But Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, which is a plaintiff in the Supreme Court case, said his group opposes the measures. They would not reduce crime but would make it more burdensome and costly for law-abiding citizens to obtain firearms, he said.

"It provides a smokescreen for the mayor and many of the aldermen, so they don't have to deal with the real problems in Chicago," said Pearson, whose group is backing legislation in Springfield that would let people carry guns in public.

Daley backed changes to state law that would require background checks for those buying a gun in a private sale, ban assault weapons, require that gun dealers be licensed and limit the number of handgun purchases to one per person per month. Those were all ideas that failed in previous legislative sessions.

This time, the mayor also is asking the General Assembly to make it a Class 1 felony to knowingly sell a gun to a known gang member, stiffen penalties for unlawfully using a weapon and require "micro-stamping" of guns that make it easier to match weapons used in crimes.

Somebody should remind him that he's not actually the governor of Illinois.

It makes me ashamed to be (distantly!) related to the guy.

Aren't there already strict laws on criminals who use guns?

Attempting to keep firearms from the hands of criminals is an honorable goal. I applaud the desire and efforts. However, targeting the otherwise benign and non-criminal actions of upstanding citizens does nothing to inhibit criminals from obtaining and using firearms.

The howling that Daley hears is in regards to the lunacy of thinking another five, ten or hundred statutes will do anything the existing hundreds have not. It's particularly ridiculous, when many of the statutes target upstanding citizens instead of criminals, all the while leaving citizens wholly unable to effectively protect themselves or their families outside the home.

Daley has nothing to say, when the whole package of anti-firearms statutes on the books in Illinois utterly FAILS to stop crime.

Seems like he sees the handwriting on the wall. He knows he will lose McDonald and he's looking for a new way to control the law abiding.

How do new gun laws stop the "flow of illegal guns"?

    I am missing something?!

If the guns are considered illegal, wouldn't that mean that there are already statutes that give them that status. How would additional laws change anything? I know I am preaching to the choir here, I just have to vent for a sec.

Everyone knows that we need to ban illegal guns.
The preceding post may contain sarcasm; it's just better that way. However, it is still intended with construction and with the Love of my L-rd Y'shua.

Yeah, I wanted to say to him, "That's great, now when you are going to propose laws that actually do that."

His proposals are just a standard laundry list of worthless feel-good bullet points.

The die is cast. We have entered a post gun-control era, and Daley's pathetic flailing is more evidence of that.

Stricter laws? Aren't the ones thay have now strict?
Maybe El Supremo Daley should hold off until the Supreme Court is finished with the MacDonald case. He may find he can't do as mch as he claims! Lots of rediculous, political mumbo-jumbo as usual.

Why not just make it a felony to be a gang member and lock them all up? There, problem solved.

If they would just focus on the BGs/gangs and not on the law abiding citizens they may accomplish something. And when they do bust a scumbag gang memeber, don't just slap him on the hand, but put the sucker away.

Instead of stricter gun control, how about we outlaw politicians or at-least politicians who don't understand existing laws.
