looking for advice on .38 special self defense rounds

So I am looking for what self defense round to get for my wifes Ruger LCR and have narrowed it down to a few options. Just wondering if anyone has any good advice or has used any of the ammo listed below and what your thoughts are on it. I guess I am leaning towards one of the buffalo bore rounds but they all seem like they would be effective:

    Hornady 38 Special 158 gr XTP/

Standard Pressure Short Barrel Low Flash Heavy .38 Special Ammo - 150 gr. Hard Cast Wad Cutter (850fps/M.E. 241 ft. lbs.)

Standard Pressure Short Barrel Low Flash Heavy .38 Special Ammo - 158 gr. Soft Lead SWC-HC (850fps/M.E. 253 ft. lbs.)

Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel Ammunition 38 Special +P 135 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point Box of 20 - MidwayUSA

Personally I would go with either of the last two. I keep the Speer SB 135 +p in the wifes 36.

Unless there are advances I am unaware of I would be suspect of the XTP's expansion at .38 velocities.

Of the listed loadings, I like the notion of the standard pressure 158 grain lead SWC-HP best. I use a handload that gives very similar velocities with that weight and style bullet (except not a hollow point) and it has given excellent results over many years for field use. All sizes of critters and varmints go down for the count with good hits using such a load. I like that particular bullet weight and don't have much use for light weight bullets in the .38 Special.

Such a load shot to point of aim in the only LCR I've used and recoil is quite manageable.

Another vote for Speer Gold Dots. They are fantastic rounds and I use them in most of my firearms, especially the +P variety when possible.

Gold Dot. + P velocity with a mild recoil. If it was for my own use it would be a LSWC +P HP.

well it looks like ive at least narrowed it down to the last two then.

I think I would like the the gold dot a lot more if it was a slightly heavier bullet. I also really like how buffalo bore gets nearly +p power from a standard pressure round

For the 38 spl I like, in this order, 135g Gold Dot SB, 158g lead HPSWC, 125g Hornady XTP HP and 140g HBWC.
I stay away from 158g jacketed bullets for the 38.
My wife prefers 140g HBWC with 158g lead HPSWC in the speed loaders. Her choice makes a lot of sense to me.

Of the one's you listed I'd go with the Gold Dot 135's. IMHO the Buffalo Bore 158 Gr LSWCHP +P is head and shoulders the best. I carry that in my M&P 340 instead of .357 Mags. It's that hot!
