which JHp ammo is good for RIA 1911 Govt?

Hey all i just got a RIA 1911 Govt .45 acp pistol today, i went to the range had some FTF since its not broken in well enough yet.

it grouped very good its a accurate .45 , it met my expactations. i wonder which JHp ammo is good with this gun since the RIA will be my main carry gun after i get a holster.

any suggestions on what ammo to use ? i am currently using Federal 230 gr ball for now .

The only JHP I've ever had an issue with in my RIA 1911 is--very occasionally--230gr Gold Dots, and that's when I chambered the first round; the slide wouldn't quite go fully into battery, but the T of TRB got it to go home. When actually firing, they all fed and shot great.

Right now, it's loaded with 230gr HydraShok--yes, I know, HS isn't one of the best choices in a SD round, but I've got a ton of it, and my RIA likes it just fine...

I'd suggest buying a few different rounds and see what your 1911 likes, but put a solid 500 rounds of FMJ through it first...and if you still have issues, contact RIA and they'll be happy to take a look at it.

Also--did you clean it thoroughly before you shot it? Mine came in awfully heavy oil, and that may have gunked up the works some.

The best thing you can do for your 1911 in terms of feeding ammo is to get a Tripp Cobramag, a Wilson 47D, or a Wilson ETM. I'd try a Tripp first if you have a Springfield 1911 as some of them don't play nice with the 47D mag. I prefer the Tripp for the big basepad and what I consider to be a follower that is second to none. Quality magazines in a 1911 with a properly cut feed ramp and correctly aligned barrel throat will feed any ammo that you feed it.

As for ammo, buy something that is plentiful in your area and reliable in your gun. Hope that helps!

I wouldn't carry it until I had at least a couple hundred trouble free rounds of hardball through it, and then a solid 50-100 of my chosen carry load.

And I'm sure plenty of folks will chime in that hardball is just dandy for carry, but I'm not one of them. IMHO, the only reason to carry ball ammo is if your pistol won't feed a JHP.

    Solid advice.

Sounds like a good reason to get rid of a gun to me.

Personally, if I had a gun with that issue, that'd be my route...but I also realize that not everyone has that option.

Try PDX1 winchester used by the FBI for there agents that Carry 1911's...

box of ammo run about 21.97 for a 20 rd box..at walmart...

Also try using 2000 grit wet sand paper on the feedramp and use some polish to smooth it out, then clean and Go shoot..
    Good luck happy shooting ...

+1 on everything. Just a note on the FMJs; they'll get the job done until the pistol proves itself reliable running the HPs.

I've shot about a half dozen different HP profiles through mine. no problems with any of them.

Why would you keep a carry gun that won't run reliably with modern ammo?

That is, of course, assuming it ends up not being reliable with JHP.

i got a pamphlet with gun it says due to match grade barrel and tight specs the gun needs 500 rounds to be broken in . so that means the gun needs to be broken in.

most match grade barrels and tighter specs have very tight tolerances- that figures why i got most of the bullets inside the bullseye!

It's just a 1911. It should be able to feed anything if you get a good magazine and at most a ramp polish from a decent gunsmith. I think the go-to ammo for reliable feeding is the Gold Saber. It's got a round profile with a relatively small hollow point and a stiff brass jacket. Built to feed reliably.
