Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!

Thanks for the feed back. I know the gun and ammo will function well from this gun, I wonder about the effectiveness of the bullet from a short barrel. I plan to carry Golden Saber as my round of choice. I think it is the carry round for the Tulsa PD. Does anyone know of testing using different barrel lengths shooting the 9-mm cartridge?

Hello. Though not from an XD, here are some velocities I obtained (10 shot averages fired 10' from the chronograph screens) using a Glock 26. Perhaps they will be in the same general "ballpark" velocity range:

    Glaser 80-gr. (Silver)
    Average Velocity: 1514 ft/sec

    Corbon 115-gr. DPX +P
    Average Velocity: 1181 ft/sec

    Federal 115-gr. JHP
    Average Velocity: 1111 ft/sec

    Hornady 124-gr. XTP (TAP)
    Average Velocity: 1100 ft/sec

    Corbon 125-gr. JHP +P
    Average Velocity: 1188 ft/sec

    Winchester 127-gr. +P+ (RA9TA)
    Average Velocity: 1246 ft/sec

    Best.

That is great information. The ft/sec is higher than I thought it would possible from a short barrel pistol. I now see why everyone recommended +P ammo. Thank you everyone for the quick replies. While I have confidence in any well tested compact gun, this input puts to rest any doubts about carrying my XD-9sc. This is a great forum. I hope I can add to the powerful collective pool of knowledge in the future.

My $.02 "BEST" is going to vary with each particular gun IMHO. Buy a mess of quality HP carry ammo and test it in your choice of carry gun. Go from there.

While I may sound a bit naive about ballistics, I have to say that I feel 100% confident w/ Wal-Mart's Winchester USA 147gr JHP for my XD-9 subbie. That ammo has proven to be a consistent feeder and shooter from my subbie. I don't know the fps, ft-pounds, etc from the 3" barrel, but I'm confident that with proper shot-placement, that ammo racing out of my subbie will do the job right.

For those of you with 3" barrel guns I believe Magsafe is now making a round designed for short barrels. Although flash and recoil are increased. I'm still going to stick with normal Gold Dots, Corbon DPX, or Hornady TAP in my Kahr PM40. I don't need to volunteer for extra flash and recoil in this little beast.

I, like Blackhawk, like the information on the tacticalforums link. 147 grain Winchester SXT and Speer GD's are my choice, especially in a XD-9 Subcompact.

A friend of mine just gave me some Hyda-shocks and Golden Golden Sabers in 147gr, have not had a chance to try them out in my Sig yet. Right now I keep two mags loaded with Remington JHP in 1214gr, It works reliably and is accurate. don't know about stopping power, it is hard to get the more exotic JHP's here in Canada and expensive when you do. $25 (plus 14% tax) for Remington JHP in .45acp x 50.
