Glock 19 vs. Hornady Critical Defense

I am new to this forum and need some advise. Earlier this year I bought a Glock 19 as the wife's home defense weapon because it fit hand so well. We have shot about 150 - 200 rounds through it ( mostly Winchester white box) without a single problem and I have cleaned it since. This weekend we shot Hornady Critical Defense 115gr and out of 24 rounds it failed to feed 5 times. Needless to say, I was shocked and the wife's confidence in her weapon was shaken a bit. I helped that by opening a 100rd box of the Winchester and sailed through it without hitch. What could explain our problems? Bad lot of ammo, bad magazine or something I am not thinking of?

    Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Limp-wristing would top my list of causes. The Hornady is a "hotter" load and has more recoil, subsequently requiring a firmer, locked-wrist grip for the slide to push against.

There have also been reports of the rubber tip dragging on the feedramp and causing problems.

Just get a different ammo, there are tons of better options than critical defense anyway. Gold Dot, Ranger-T, PDX1, HST, DPX, Golden Saber are all rounds I would choose over hornady, and that's just off the top of my head.

    Hornady Critical Defense...

For those who have been successfully marketed to, and who think the FBI Balistic Protocals (Which Hornady CD has been designed NOT to meet...) are BS.

The limp wrist comment is also very possible.

That about says it all. My Glock 19 has never had a FTF or FTE in several thousand rounds of mixed FMJ and HP. There are very few things that go wrong with that weapon. Anything is possible though.

I knew I'd get some good ideas.

I think the rubber tip is the problem. I watched her closely after the first FTF and I don't think she is limp wristing. She has fired it successfully with other ammo. But that rubber tip has a sticky feel to it and it sounds reasonable that it's catching on the feed ramp. But there will be no more testing of that ammo so I'll never know 100%. Maybe the Hornady CD would be better suited to a revolver. I'll try some of the alternatives.

    Thanks for the help.

Was it catching on the feed ramp? Not cycling? Not locking into battery?

First of all, you gun is still in need of break in. Most manufacturers recommend 200-300 rds. However most authorities on handguns recommend up to 500. Use your own judgement on this.
Limpwristing is a possible cause, but people that limp wrist do it all the time, not just when firing defensive ammo.
IMO your pistol is showing a distinct preference for FMJ ammo as do most autoloaders. There are things you can do such as polishing the feed ramp. I would however recommemnd switching to a different type of ammo as another poster suggested. Look for one that has a small cavity and avoid the ones with polymer inserts. I use and recommend Winchester Ranger or Federal HST which both have long roundish profiles.

The spent cases were ejecting and the next round lodged nose up, half out of the magazine with the slide partially open.

My GLOCK 19 handles Remington Golden Sabres and whatever FMJ I can throw at it just fine.

Polish the feed ramp on a Glock?

    Wow. Just...wow.

This is almost funny...but it's actually sad.

FWIW, I'm also a girl with a new G19. For my defensive ammo, I use Gold Dot 147 grain jhp, and Buffalo Bore 115 gr +P.

    They feed fine for me.
