what's best 9mm short barrel ammo.
I am picking up a ruger sr9c this week and am wondering what would be a good defensive round out of the the short 3.5" barrel. I'd prefer to stay away from the really hot rounds I'd much rather hit my target than make a bunch of noise and miss, any good suggestions and why. p.s. I know this question is comming so I'll answer it now I didn't get the glock 26 because I just don't care for glocks, sorry.

Any ammo that works in a standard barrel should work in a short barrel. Why give up that extra punch just because the barrel is a inch or two shorter?
Glock: G22 .40 S&W
Smith and Wesson: Model 437 .38 Spl, and Sigma SW9VE 9mm

Choose the ammo that is most reliable and accurate for the range. For carry the same applys plus potent as in +p hollow point ammo. All this take trying out different brands and types of ammo that your new gun likes to eat, feed shoot, ect. The difference in 3.5 and 5 inches in barrel length won't make as much difference in your ability to defend yourself as will you experimenting on the range to get the right combination down so you know whats happening whenever or where ever you pull the trigger. Training and more training. Good luck.

Most carry guns do have barrels between 3"-4" in length. The real disadvantage
is the blinding flash typical of short barrels during dim light shooting. Actually when you think about it, a shorter barrel translates into lower velocity, so a hot load might be to your advantage.

According to Dr. Gary Roberts of terminal ballistics fame, there is no significant decrease in velocity or terminal ballistics when using standard 9mm ammo from a 3.5" barrel. As most of designed for 4" barrels, it just isn't an issue.
It isn't until you get into the snub nose (~2") barrel situations, OR short .45 ACPs that you need to worry about special ammo.
In the case of .45 ACP, because it is low pressure many standard rounds out of short barrels will result in some of the propellant being blown out of the barrel before it finishes burning. This both creates greater flash and reduced velocity (that propellant is wasted).

9mm ammo options
Have you read the online article "Ammunition for the Self-Sefense Firearm"
It's pretty comprehensive, more than i'll ever need unless i'm in a war
The ammo choices even include what NOT to use AND covers some specific guns classifications with the ammo to use with them, et/c, etc
IF 'ur interested simply google that title..........

Winchester actually recommends their 147gr Ranger-T in short barrels. I'd be plenty confident in them.

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd have to say the author of the artle "Ammunition for the Self Defense Firearm" is not a reliable source. Seems like there is a lot of personal opinion and very little fact or empirical testing behind those opinions.
Bottom line is use what you can shoot accurately and reliably in your gun.

I use Cor-Bon DPX in all of my calibers 9MM, 40S&W and .45ACP. All copper, runs straight and true and expands up to 80% of the original caliber. I have a ton of it in my various mags and have shot a ton of it to insure my guns will shoot it without fail. Yes it costs alot, but what is your life worth in "Social Ammo"??
