Found something odd at the range.

I was at the range today and after shooting I was policing up my brass. I came across an unusual case. It says xtreme shock 9mm on the base. I have seen the ads for extreme shock ammo( ) but this thread is about the case, not the gimmicky ammo. This case is weird. It's not brass, nickel, aluminum or steel. I'm assuming that it's plated brass, I guess, but plated with what?

It is blueish in color and VERY smooth. It could be some sort of Titanium nitride coating or something but I just don't know. Anyone know what this is? I've never seen a case like this in 25 years of shooting.

On top is steel case wolf 7.62X39.

From left to right it's nickel plated, the case in question, aluminum and brass.

Sorry the pic isn't that great but the case is bluish-black. A little more blue in it than what the camera picked up.

I found one like that the other day also.It was the same color as my AK rounds.I looked at it,then trashed it as I didn't know what it was.Are the com bloc countries making 9mm rounds now?If they are,its news to me. sj

They've been making 9mm for decades now, but mostly 9x21mm and 9x18mm. They did make some 9x19mm for export to revolutionaries during the cold war as well.

It is steel, it comes out of the old soviet block areas. I have rounds in 9mm. Great to shoot, just cant reload them. Cabella's sells a lot of these types for their special ammo sales. My Glock ate them fine yesterday, kind of on the dirty side after firing.

Look outside, is there a dark sedan sitting in the street with tinted windows? You're being watched.

Magnet test? Rub it to see if it rubs off? Sure looks like Hornady's case though.

I was thinking exactly that. I've got a box of Horandy TAP 9MM that looks exactly like that. Other boxes of the same have not had that case...just one box I bought about 2 years ago.

CORRECTION - it is "blacken nickel".. I was shooting Hornady. The guy at Cabella's said they were steel. Sorry.

Hornady TAP casings had been nickel plated brass material.
It appeared to be black under light.

The nickel plate was to provide smoothness and low friction as drag during the loading process to not delay cycling and reduce potential for timing issues and function errors.
As I understand it though Hornady no longer mfrs. TAP using that black coating. They now are silver color in coating.

What the folks of 'Extreme Shock' use for their own casings is an unknown to me, but I would not assume that by coloration alone they are same in material or properties to that of Hornady TAP.

More info on Hornady TAP ~ Black nickel coated casings can be found at; http://www.gunsandammo.com/content/tap-the-power
