That is one of those questions where you will get a lot of answers that are all pretty much opinion. IMO (since we are dealing in opinions), the best defensive ammunition for any handgun is:

    1- Available
2- Feed Reliable in your gun(s)
3- Accurate in your gun(s) and hits point of aim

I'm pretty much happy with Speer Gold Dot or Winchester SXT, Ranger T, PDX, etc. but that doesn't make the others bad choices. Any premium JHP should do the job in .40 S&W (and probably the regular JHP ammunition too). In .380 ACP my preference (if I had a gun so chambered) would be a solid slug of some kind to increase penetration. My choice would probably be Buffalo Bore LFN.

    As stated above...

    1. Reliable in your gun
    2. Available
    3. Accurate

    4. Depends on caliber to some degree too. For .380 and below, I like FMJ; for 9mm and above, I like a good Hp based on items 1-3 above.

Anything that feeds 100% in your pistol, shoots with what you consider acceptible accuracy and control, and will penetrate 12+ inches in calibrated gel with reliable expansion after penetrating clothing.

In .40, there's a few choices: Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo

In .380, the choices are more limited. You can have expansion, or you can have adequate penetration, but you can't have both.

And what works great in my gun won't necessarily work the same in yours. Which is why every shooter needs to buy a few boxes of different ammo and make their own informed decision.

Cor-Bon DPX in 9MM. .40S&W, and .45ACP. It works in my guns and shoots to point of aim. Nuff said. I can also get it locally. Have never seen Gold Dots or Winchester PDX.

I've been happy with both Corbon DPX and Federal HST. I do also have some Winchester Ranger T around.

There is no such thing as a magic, one-shot-stop bullet, at least in handgun calibers. Most folks will tell you what they carry and why, but the real test of a self defense bullet performance is how it functions in a human being. That being the case, most of us choose our carry ammo based on advertising, marketing, and advice from trusted sources. Unless someone can tell you how their favorite bullet functioned in a real life & death shooting, we really don't know for sure.

There are many ammo makers and in the past few years there has been quantum advances in bullet design and performance. I had the advantage of working as a homicide investigator and have been at many autopsies and emergency surgery when the bullets are recovered from the bodies. I've seen supposedly super bullets with large hollow points get clogged while passing through clothing and perform like a fmj in the body. I've seen damage from Corbon's Glaser "Safety Slugs" which cause devastating, but shallow wounds under some circumstances.

Based on what I have seen, and now that I can carry any kind of ammo I want in retirement, I feel very comfortable carrying two types of ammo. In my .45 acp pistols I like Federal's Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ). In my .40 S&W pistols I like the new Hornaday Critical Defense line. Those two types of bullets expand each and every time, not most of the time, but every time.

I don't think there is a single "best" choice of ammo, but with the modern design and engineering in ammo, any major manufacturer's self defense ammo can likely be counted on to work for you.

What we carry, what we load them with and how we carry and use them, is a very personal choice. Ultimately it is we who will live or die by our choices.
