    Ballistics question; Rifle or handgun?

Reading another thread about how to tell if a lead bullet came from a 9mm or a .38 got me thinking - can you (or ballistics expert) tell if a .38 or .357 was shot from a carbine (rifle) or a hand held revolver?

Probably not by simple observation. If anything, the rifling twist rate would have to be identified. For .38 and .357, 1:16 is pretty common; that's the twist in both a Marlin lever gun and some Colt revolvers, but there may be some variations among different manufacturers.

A carbine fired round should produce a longer wound cavity than a pistol round because of the higher MV from the longer barrel.

I would think that the increased duration of contact with rifling would create somewhat deeper/different impressions that could be determined in a lab.

I think the woman on CSI-M could. She's smart. And tell you what brand of firearm, what type primer was used (probably a sniper primer), and whether the shooter was R/H or L/H'd. (If you haven't noticed, I'm not a fan--too much emphasis on sunglasses and blondes.)

There are actually several clues, rate of turn, depth of lands and grooves, number of lands and gooves, direction of twist and the biggie if it was shot from a semi auto carbine, brass left at the scene since revolvers don't eject.
