Speer Introducing .22 Winchester Magnum Self Defense Loads
Speer .22 WMR Personal Protection Ammunition | The Firearm Blog

Speer has introduced a .22 Winchester Magnum cartridge optimized for use in short barrel self-defense pistols. From a 1.9" barrel the 40 grain bullet leaves the muzzle at 1150 fps, generating 99 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. It would likely perform better in longer barreled guns like the Kel-Tec PMR-30.
From comparison, the Speer Gold Dot Personal Protection .25 Auto is loaded with a 36 gr bullet which leaves a 2" barrel at 900 fps with 63 ft/lbs of energy.
Speer says ...
These loads are designed for compact rimfire handguns and specific self defense applications. A large cavity ensures maximum expansion and terminal ballistics at reduced velocities. Consistent 10 to 11-inch penetration was achieved in factory testing--in barrels as short as two inches.
“We wanted to design a self defense option that catered to the rimfire platform,” said Brand Director Rick Stoeckel. “We engineered these rounds for effective expansion and consistent functioning in close-quarter situations--where performance is absolutely critical.”

Thanks for the heads-up. I hope they are using low-flash powder. I recently got a PMR-30, and I like it a lot, but the flash is horrible. While the barrel is nominally about 4.5" long, there is only about 2.5" of bore in front of the chamber. I've chronoed some loads from it, and the new Hornady 30-gr. nylon-tip round gets the most impressive velocities (1500 fps.) and is so far in second place for accuracy, behind the WW 34gr. Supreme load, which does 1469 and has a bit less flash. I'll definitely be getting some of the new Speer ammo for testing.

Also, Hornady has now added the 22 magnum to their Critical Defense line.
From a 1 7/8" barrel, Hornady claims 1,000 fps with a 45 grain bullet.
They show gel testing on their website comparing the the 22 magnum Critical Defense to their 380 Critical Defense......

I have looked all over for the new Hornady ammo described and can't find it anywhere. I read a lot about it and it seems to fit the bill for my NAA mini-mag. Has anyone tested any?

I have used both hornady v tip and the speer cd load in my rugar single six at about 2o yds. I used two thick phone books wet.
The hornady went right threw both. The speer went threw first and big mess out the second. Cant wait to get my pmr30 to see what will happen.
Got my ammo at perrys in Windell N.C. They want way to much for there ammo, local g.s. can order it at reg retail and below.

Looks sweet. One of these days, I'm going to have to break down and buy that Rugar MKII bull barrel that I've been wanting since my 20s.

as i've noticed about others--that they do not always do as i think they will nor often as they say they will.
this not only makes life interesting, it makes it dangerous too.

Make sure to check the ammo if you get this.
The small box of .25 acp Gold Dots I bought had defects (about half of them had very light serrations that lacked the exposed lead you see on all Gold Dots).
I'm interested if it will even expand from an NAA mini.
