Public Defender & Birdshot?
I bought a Tarus Public Defender 2" SS .45 LC/.410 pistol.
The other day I was shooting a variety of ammo through it.
I like the blast of pellets from #4 Birdshot but liked the damage done by slugs or PDx ammo more.
Is #4,6,8,or #9 shot usefull as a PD load?

Think I would rather have a good .22 rimfire pistol over a judge loaded with birdshot.

I wouldn't trust it at 7 yards to stop a threat, could leave a big nasty wound in the summer, and may not penetrate heavy jacket and clothing in the winter,I've shot too many small game with shotshells and a lot of them weren't killed outright, and as far as rabbit and squirrel found a lot of pellets in the fat just under the skin

One more voice in the chorus shouting "NO."
Any of the buckshot offerings will be far more satisfying then birdshot in the defensive realm.

Go to your local wal-mart, they have started to carry Winchester PDX boxes that are half 410 shells and half 45 lc ammunition. Just a helpful FYI

PDX or Federal's hangun buckshot load are the only loads I would consider for defense with the .410, handgun or long gun.

Or this: cut slug assuming that it would not cause a problem at the forcing cone.
Seriously though this is a long video but is a pretty thorough but not scientific test firing: JUDGE

I would use the .45 LC as your defense round.

Birdshot out of a long barreled shotgun is good for birds and mammals weighing less than ten pounds.
Birdshot out of a Judge is good for mice, rats and small reptiles.

This.
Buffalo Bore makes an awesome combat wadcutter in .45 LC.
Could it be used as a PD? Sure it could, might not be that hot though.

Hey you guys heard of these folks Paraklese Technologies?
They have a 4 ball(.375 size) 2 1/2" shell called 0000 buck this looks promising as does their slugs.

The bottom line is this, .410 ranges from marginal to completely unsuitable out of a long gun, it ain't gettin any better when you chop the barrel down to 2". Get .45lc loads for defense, or better yet, just use a more suitable gun.
