I don't know about this story, but this would have been a good time to test Hornady's new "Critical Duty."

In all seriousness Joey, I'd say all bets are off on handguns while in a gunfight between two moving vehicles. That's just pretty dang extreme right there, and it's not about to make me start carrying a hi-cap 10mm (although I don't rule out doing so one day).

Amazing story, and I hope this doesn't degenerate into a caliber bake-off.

Maybe that dude has never heard of brakes? I'm not about to have a firefight whilst traveling down the highway and before trying to maneuver a retreat.

That being said, I feel safe with my 9mm, and it carries well should I ever need to defend myself in person. But if I'm in a vehicle the first thing I am going to do is evade.

I also have my doubts about the story but I feel 9mm is a great defense round. Nobody is going to say that it is more powerful than a larger caliber but it will do for 99% of the reasons you would need a handgun.

    9mm good enough?

I have an XDm 9mm and M&P9c I just purchased. I also have a Colt 1911 Officers. I have carried the 1911 and bought the MP9c because its lighter and carries 10 or 12 rounds depending on which mag I use. The colt carries 6. Now, I am no expert and my take is avoid trouble at all costs, but if it comes looking for you it's about reliability, accuracy, time to target and firepower. I hope to never test those because I know they are easier written than practiced and easier practiced than applied. bottom line is if you hit what you aim at and are quick on target death by 9mm is just as dead as death by 45. I test fired the mp9c and a Baretta PX4Storm before I bought. I was low and left with the Barretta but still realatively center mass for 25 rounds. I was 25 rounds in the head with mp9c ..... I own it now. good luck and shoot straight!

This story reeks of inconsistencies, and is another classic "well I heard about this guy who got shot 59 times by a [fill in caliber] and lived to tell the tale, thus the [fill in caliber] sucks and no one should use it." Sorry to be a humbug, but these helpful and informative threads about someone's friend's second cousin who had something happen to them and then deduced afterwords that because their ONE round of "premium self-defense ammo" shot while traveling at highway speeds through two layers of automotive glass failed to incapacitate the driver of the other car and so don't work are faintly ridiculous. The author of the story is "sure" that he hit this crazed lunatic who suddenly decided to run him off the road and then shoot him, just he like he was "sure" that the man pulled a 1911 out, even though the author was making all these great observations while traveling at highway speeds on the shoulder of a highway, while trying to look into a tinted out car. Yep, sounds legit to me.

I normally carry a .45 acp, however on occasion I'm required to carry a 9mm and I hardly feel under gunned.

As far as the jackets from the windshield shots being on the dashboard that is why they make bonded bullets. Handgun ammo and auto windshields are not a good mix. Angled auto safety glass deflects bullets. Caliber is not the issue here.

As has been pointed out, if you are firing forward through the windshield a better choice would be to step on the brakes. Driving down the highway shooting through a barrier in an enclosed space and not knowing exactly where your rounds are actually going is not what I would call the most intelligent thing to do. There may be times when this is the only option but as I read it, that was not the case here.

I always found such challenges stupid, I wouldn't volunteer to stand in front of a pellet gun.

Hot tip from your pal Mike: If you are going to shoot at someone from inside your vehicle, roll down your window first.
