    I've long ignored specialty ammunition of any sort, choosing to carry the +P 158 grain loading in every serious .38 Special revolver that is regularly carried, whether it has a 2-inch barrel or a 4-inch barrel. I agree with Gman. Truth be told, a standard velocity 158 grain .38 Special load has much going for it and I wouldn't feel cheated if I was using such loads.

    The 125gr Nyclad from Federal was originally called the "Chief's Special" load and was (and still is) designed for snubs. It's my load of choice for guns I don't care to shoot +P in or for guns where the recoil of a +P 158gr is too much for me to comfortably control. In situations where I can use +P I use a 158gr LSWCHP+P, mostly Federal or Winchester since I have a stockpile of both of those.

    Similarly, Sportsman's Warehouse carries Buffalo Bore cartridges.

    I prefer to use the standard pressure, low flash variety. It's still pretty stout, but manageable

    I've shot Winchester and Federal's 125 grain +P stuff, and it was a lot softer in the recoil department than Buffalo Bore's 158 grain standard pressure stuff.
    Exactly the round I carry. Shoots well and recoil was very manageable. I did notice it to be a bit more recoil than the other box of standard pressure ammo I had on my last test fire (can't remember the brand, sorry).

    I've heard a lot of good things about buffalo bore, but don't have any personal experience to prove that its a better defensive round. (I hope it is)

    Google "Ballistics by the Inch" to see some good info on bullet velocity as a function of barrel length, based on a test barrel with some real-world guns thrown in.

    I have my 642 loaded with BB 158 Gr LSWCHP+P. They are a handful to shoot, and harder to get off a hit on a second shot. I wonder about the new BB Outdoorsman. That has to harder to control for followup shots.

    proficiency with the snubby steel frame usually is attained rater quickly;
    perhaps 2 or 3 sessions of a few boxes each will get most to do Mozambique'ss
    (5 hits on differentnt targets).

    change to a light weight, a 642-1 with +Ps, and all bets are off.
    but stay with a silvertip or LSW and the shooter will transition to the lighter gun surprisingly quickly...perhaps 2 boxes.

    these comments come from observing students who start with little shooting experience.

    This is what I have been using for the last five years, it offers the velocity and knockdown power of a +P loading with lower pressure and less recoil..........
