This is a discussion on .38 special +p Remington Golden Saber (gel Test) within the Defensive Ammunition & Ballistics forums, part of the Defensive Carry Discussions category; this round performed pretty good, especially from a 2"snub and through 4 layers of denium..definitely worth consideration for carry in a S&W 442/642 or Ruger lcr.38+p ...

I like the work that this gent does. I find his ballistics test pretty informative and valid.

Well done. Always good to see some validation of my carry ammo.

On a related note, I practice with Remington 125 Gr +P SJHP, as the ballistics almost match the Golden Sabers 125 + P. I wonder how the "el cheapo" SJHP's perform under the same conditions.

Unless real ballistic gelatin that's been calibrated to the FBI protocol standard is being used and to a repatable scientific standard I put no weight into these informal amateur you tube video tests.

Penetration and expansion test of the .38 Special +P Remington Golden Saber 125 gr JHP using a diluted form of SIM-test Ballistic testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. test gun was a S&W 438 Airweight, 2" barrel.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO testS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. There are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data.

Interesting results re PDX1! Thanks for putting these together.

Crue2009, have you done any of the old FBI loads or some of the bulk semi-jacketed hollow points? That would be interesting as well....

    Thanks

Smile Remington Golden Saber .38 Special +P ammo

From what I have read, this ammo has performed well in actual shootings with it? I have to think that the impromptu gel tests are somewhat corroborated by actual results. According to updated stats from Evan Marshall post 9/11 this specific ammo has 67% one shot stop percentage, not including shots to the head, neck or extremity shots. With that in mind, this is acceptable to me in a concealed carry/backup gun to my Glock 21!

The Golden Sabre rounds always seemed to have good penetration and expansion for the most part, their one drawback was the tendency to shed its jacket. They seem to have solved that issue with the bonded bullets except they are hard to find.

I carry the golden sabre's in my 642 partially because of this vid, and the fact that it seems to always be in stock at the local box stores.

Most of what I've seen shows the Golden Sabres to perform not quite as well as HST's, Ranger T's, or Gold Dots in 9mm and .45 ACP. The differences are so slight, though, that I wouldn't worry about it.

Where the Golden Sabres seem to really shine is in .380 ACP. They're the best performing round ("on paper") that I've seen, and they seem to function the best of any ammo in finicky little .380 pistols.

Sim-test material has a considerably higher density than ordnance gel/soft tissue which generally results in lower penetration, for equal calibration and bullet expansion. In addition, it appears that sim-test material is more sensitive to the actual BB calibration and to get comparable results with results in ordnance gel, these factors have to be taken into account. This test of the 125 gr. GS shows surprisingly good relative performance, which sometimes happens when the test consists of only one shot. It seems likely that this particular round took a bit longer, than what most often occurs, to fully open up due to the effect of the denim in the cavity, thus increasing the penetration beyond what is average for this round.
