Ammuntion pricing. BS or not?

Howdy all.

Still kind of a newbie around here, but I am learning my way around.

Here is my question:

Went to Cabela's the other day to buy my new CC gun (Ruger LC9).
The guy who helped me was very helpful and knowledgeable. But I am not sure if what he told me is BS. I think I would have heard at least a whisper about this.

He said that due to some law that our illustrious president signed, that there was going to be an increase of up to 500% in the price of ammo. The way he was talking, this was going to happen in the next month or so. He was not "able" to tell me the date that this would go into effect. He said he knew when, but was not "allowed" to tell me. But he did state that it had to do with manufacturers adding "trackable" components to the casing, load, and powders. He also stated that we (shooters) were going to have to register our ammunition. This law also included reloading supplies.


So, what is the deal??? was this guy pulling my leg?

It just seems to me that this will be a huge pain in the you-know-what to all involved. And, I just can't see the feds tracking EVERY piece of the millions of rounds that are created/used every year.
They couldn't keep track of the relatively few guns in the "Fast and Furious" program.

Total BS. Much of what salesmen say over the counter is misinformation or blatant lies, especially when it involves inspiring a fear and need.to buy now in a customer.

Don't get your news from a person if they are selling you something relevant to the news.

Doesn't pass the smell test. The idea that a Cabela's retail associate is not only aware of soon to be signed legislation (Congress doesn't even know if their laws will pass), but also has a firm percentage of cost increase to the manufacturers, distributors, dealers and consumer is laughable.

I agree Titleist. It didn't pass the smell test to me either.
He was smooth at it. He said it all with a straight face. Didn't work though. We ended up getting a box of Critical Defense, and a box of Guard Dog ammo.
We are looking into starting to reload. Years ago, I bought a Lee 3-stage press in 9mm from a retired LEO for $100.
We also have a few thousand rounds of brass too. So, once the basement is in shape and safe, we are going to start loading FMJ for practice with. I only carry factory loads for CC. Don't want the legal hassle on the off chance that I have to defend myself.

Ammunition Accountability Act emails have been going around for years.

if that happens I am gonna have to rob some gang members to buy some more ammo... thank god its easy to pick them out of a crowd with them wearing those hoodies and saggy pants

Yeah. I think a nasty letter to Cabelas is in order for this one.
Trying to generate sales by peddling fear is not right. It is especially not right when he is peddling fear to a woman.
One of the reasons we went to Cabelas instead of Bass Pro or the LGS is the way that they treated me.
Bass Pro and LGS employees have a tendency (at least the ones around me) to treat women as frail creatures who can not handle a "big boy" weapon.

He suggested that I buy a couple of 900 round cases of some Russian steel-cased ammo. At over $275 each!

Now, I will say, the man BEHIND the gun counter at Cabelas was fabulous with me. He took the time to answer all my questions and gave good recommendations.
The employee who gave me this line of BS was the "helper" for filling out the online application for purchase of the LC9.

And, yes, a letter is definately due, and yes, I do know the employees name!

Salesman..... he probably is up for a free soda if he can move a case of ammo.

I would suggest a phone call to the store manager instead of a letter to corporate. I've always found that the best results come from direct communication with a person's superior. At HQ this guy is just a number, but if you call the store his manager will know him by name and address the problem directly.
