As of late my 9mm round of choice has been the 135gr +P Critical Duty round. IMO, the bullet weight coupled with the technology behind the expanding flex tip are worth the effort. tnoutdoors9 has a awesome video of the round on YouTube. It looked like one of the best 9mm rounds he's tested IMO.

Hornany CD. .380, 9mm and .40 cal. My CCL instructor said it was the best and that he carries it was good enough for me.

Winchester Ranger T 124g +P or Federal HST 124g +P (Spring and Summer). In Fall and Winter same manufacturer but i move up the 147 grain pills.

My reloads (124 gr FMJs), 147 gr WWB JHPs or whatever practice Ammo I have on hand. As long as it fires well thru my XD (haven't found anything that doesn't), I'm not very picky.
I haven't heard of any crimes stopped by armed citizens due to the ammo they had loaded in their firearm.

I'm more worried about the collateral damage of a complete pass through from an FMJ. You're certainly right though that people can get too wrapped up in ballistics and brands; myself included.

147 gr Winchester Ranger T or 147 gr Remington Golden Saber. I also have 127 gr +p+ Ranger T that I would be comfortable with, although I prefer 147 gr.
