Fear mongering by the NRA and similar organizations is what is going on. Demand is temporally outstripping supply because of hoarders. It will pass.

Ammoman.com has bulk of .223 PMC, Wolf & Federal in stock. 50 and 69gr Federal are going for about $0.50/rnd. Wolf is about half that if you don't mind steel-cased. If you only want 5.56, PMC green tip is about $0.40/rnd

    All prices are delivered.

I've sure as heck seen it cheaper, but at least it's available.

My LGS has Federal 5.56 and PMC .223 both in stock at $6.95/20. He limits it to 10 boxes/person/day, but I've been buying a few every time I go in there lately.

It's gone up .15 to .20 cents a round in the last 3 months.

ammoseek.com found a variety at .29 - .39/round. .36 at ammoman for PMC OTD. Cheap as I'd like it to be - no. Available - yes.

Combination of the NRA and dealers latching onto the Obama is going to take away our guns mentality added with this new found SHTF prepping that seems to be sweeping the nation. Plus, the AR15 frame has exploded in recent years with a lot of service members coming back in country and wanting a version that they can call their own.
I like to think the Zombie craze has nothing to do with it directly, but with the movies and TV shows out there that seem to come out daily, I can't help but figure it's increasing the 'coolness' factor of owning this rifle.
So, simple economics-- as Demand increases, supply will have to catch up. In the meantime, cost will go up. Good news is that each time something like this happens, multiple new providers enter into the arena eventually driving the prices down to a sustainable level.

Gotta be the NRA, couldn't possibly be anything to do with DHS's open bid for 175 MILLION rounds of 5.56.

Hardly "gone" - but the price is creeping up again. Late last year, case loads of US-made 5.56 were running slightly under 30 cents a round at the Phoenix gun shows. Currently it's around 36 cents a round - a 20% increase. Ammoman.com, ammotogo.com and others have plenty of it to seel you.

If the prices rise, I think it's probably due more to the devaluation of the dollar; having printed so much of it. Just sayin' ... watching the prices of all commodities move, whether that's oil, silver/gold, or copper and brass...
