Are Ammo companies feeding the frenzy?
Ammo sales are on the increase as well as the price for ammo. In an election year with fears of doom & gloom coming it's easy to blame ammo prices and shortages on an Obama re-election. However, there seems to be other factors contributing. The Zombie phenomena along with television shows like doomsday preppers have inspired ammunition companies like Hornady to fuel the hype. Hornady manufactures and markets the Zombie Max ammo. Although Hornady makes an excellent product I find myself staying away from them. Clever marketing or greedy exploitation? what are your thoughts.

I don't think Hornady is fueling the hype; rather taking advantage of a growing phenomenon/market. There is a lot of competition among ammo companies in the USA so differentiation and innovation sets them apart.

It's greed. Competition drives prices down, not up. The 2008 panic was one thing, given the insecurities of the gun nuts, but now we've seen four actual years of an Obama presidency and you gotta ask yourself: even if Obama wanted to remove every gun from every legal owner, how could he with a Republican Congress? It's insanity fueled by fear. I think health care and the economy are a little higher on Obama's reelection-oriented mind than gun control.

Ammo makers along with handloading component manufacturers are lovin' it.

Hats off to Hornady! More power to them!
As far as price trends go, I think we also need to look at materials costs. Are ammo prices tracking consistently with the price of the raw materials?

Just did a quick check. Copper is now about triple what it was in 2005 and lead is about double from the same time.

Have you priced a gallon of milk lately? Ammo is not the only thing going up in price. What about the price of gasoline and diesel fuel? Pre election sensationalism by our news media or beat writer.

How about coffee? Coffee is the "new Coke" for Columbia.
I love Hornady. Bought so much from them (reloading supplies). Great company that provides EXCELLENT service to the customer.
Great bullets as well.

Yeah, I like their ammo but my P238 did not. I have some TAP 62 Gr .223 for my AR. I'm just turned off by the whole zombie thing. Maybe I'm being too critical of them.
