I carry Hornady Critical Defense 115gr 9mm FXT in both of my 9mm's (Glock 26 and XD9SC). I've shot it enough to have faith in it's ability to get me out of a bad situation.
Next gun purchase will be a S&W 642, ammo choice: most likely HCD .38+P. I also carry a Taurus TCP .380 for whenever I feel the need to pocket carry, which is very rare.
I prefer to keep my defensive arsenal simple so as to reduce the numbers of different ammunition calibers I have to stockpile.

Gold Dot is my first choice in semi-automatic pistols. In .45 ACP, GD is my first choice but Golden Saber and even Hydra-Shoks are good. It's hard to go wrong with a 230 grain bullet, whichever way you go.
I also think the Cor-Bon DPX has impressive performance if you can afford to train with it.
