Best sub-sonic 40 S&W ammo?
I own a Glock 22 & 23 and am looking for a good defensive sub-sonic (less than 1000 fps to my understanding) ammunition. I have been looking at Federal’s 180 grain HydraShok JHP because ballistic reports show it to have good penetration as well as expansion and a velocity of 969 fps. Any advise on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I use the Winchester Ranger SXT 180 Grain in 40. I use it in my Glock 22, 23 and 27.
Not sure what the difference is between a subsonic, like a 180 Grain, and a non-subsonic, like the 165 grain in both performance and recoil.
Care to share your thoughts on why you are choosing subsonic instead of a faster round?

I would second the Ranger SXT. I have shot the Politically Incorrect version of the SXT, the Black Talon, And the results were beautifully expanded bullets with deep penetration.

.40 Caliber Ammo
I just switched to Federal Bonded Hollowpoints, Full Jacket (180 Grains).....
They are supossed to be doing away with the HydraShok rounds, which is what I used to carry..........
They do 1000 FPS from a four inch barrel........
They only place I could find them was
http://www.streichers.com/
They are what most Police Departments that use .40 caliber are switching to............
I paid about 21 bucks for a box of fifty plus shipping...........Not bad for a good round..................

180 gr. Federal Tactical Hydra-Shoks. This round is different from the standard 180 gr. Hydra-Shok and it moves at about 975 fps from my 4" Glock 23. I understand that this round is also being loaded with Gold Dot bullets instead of Hydra-Shoks and called the Federal Tactical Bonded.
Side note... Federal and Speer are both owned by the same company. No surprise that they merged the technology from two of the best defensive rounds on the market in an attempt to gain a greater market share. Good idea, because I know I'm going to be switching!

180gr Ranger T (RA40T) and 180gr Federal HST are top choices, hands-down. Both are superior to hydrashok as they expand more robustly after passing through intermediate barriers.
