9mm 115gr Hornady Critical Defense issue today at the range

Went to the range today to function test and fire the M39-2, as I am wanting to have this pistol as my CCW.

Went through about 100 rounds of WW box in a pretty rapid pace with no issues, pretty happy at this point.

Finished up with what is going to be my carry ammo...

I have only 2 boxes of this of the same lot#

I had one that misfired (primer strike, but no detonation).
Tried a total of 5 times, no go.
Fired some others and no problem(so it is not a gun malfunction).

This has to be my first experience with a failure of factory defense ammo.

Now I am rethinking my carry ammo options.
I have to totally trust my pistol and ammo before I CCW with the combination.

Below are some pic's and Lot# if anyone else has had a problem.

Do you think Hornady would want this information, or it is just what it is ?

One of the guys at the range told me once if I ever encounter this, to send it back to Hornady and they will make it right by sending you more ammo.
Of course this is hear say and not first hand. As for them wanting this info, it couldnt hurt

Hornady has had sporadic issues with hard primers in it's Critical Defense line of ammunition. Combine that with CD's lack of penetration and it's a no go for me.

My preference for SD ammunition in 9mm are the 147gr Gold Dot, Ranger T & HST.

I've been hearing about this happening a bit more recently...

Had this happen to me twice now with .380 Critical Defense. The last time was this weekend. "Pssst" not a bang. Bullet left the barrel but did not cycle the action. Was cycling through my carry ammo...something I do 1-2 times a year

I am giving up on it. Too bad 'cause it fed through my LCP without issues.

NEVER had it happen with any other carry ammo...HST's, Winchester T's, Gold Dots

I read a bunch of stuff on the forums about Hornady Critical Defense having some bad batches. If my bad memory serves, the bad batch was identified by the color of the primer and I can't remember which was what.

Email Hornady and I'm sure they'll make good.
    I think, therefore I am...

Well, it looks like a 3 year on going problem with this ammo according to my research.
Should have researched it first before trying it out.
Not even going to contact Hornady, just chalk it up to experience.
    Too bad.
    Now to test alternatives.

I've stayed away from the C.D. because friend's of mine who shoot a lot more than me have told me about these same problems.. looks like I did the right thing by not purchasing it.

Don't over-think it... there are lots of choices in 9mm. I'd be inclined to move up in bullet weight.

Agree with Gasmitty, I'd think about moving up in weight. I carried CD for a while, never was really comfortable with 115 grain. I've switched to 147 gr. Ranger T and Golden Saber. Additionally, while I didn't have any function issues in 9mm, I've seen some CD FTF in 45 ACP.

Darn it. I have been carrying CD in the CW9 for ever. I have heard several stories like this recently. I emailed Horniday and the response I got back was kind of dismissive to be honest.

To the OP, I would say you should contact Horniday. I would think they would very much want to know this info.

I have 115gr CD in my CCW right now as well. I have some Federal HST on order, though, as I've been wanting to move up the weight a little on my CCW rounds. I guess this really seals the deal.

It would seem like after 3 year's they would have this problem cured. I've shot a few box's of 9mm with no issue's and .45acp that would not feed in my 1911. I've read a bunch of thread's on the same issue. Even though the 9mm didn't have an issue, I still didn't trust them. i run 124 grain Gold Dot's in all 3 of my 9mm's, out of 500 round's not one single problem. If look on the web you can find them for around $30 for a 50 round box.
