Not a 642, but still a J-frame (M36)--I like the FBI Load; 158gr+P SWCHP.
I like how they shoot to point of aim, where lighter bullets shoot a bit high.

There is a reason they try and make small bullets act like big bullets--Glockmann10mm
The Model 642 around here is also loaded up with +P 158 grain lead SWC when it is taken out for a spin.

^^^ What bmcgilvray said. There may be more advanced rounds available, but the +P lead SWC-HP rounds pretty much cover the important bases. It's what's in all the .38 wheelguns around my house.

I carry the Gold Dot 135gr +p Short Barrel, but there are several loads that would more then satisfactory.

I run 158 grn SWC standard pressure, from Buffalo Bore.
The +P stuff was too stiff for me.

Winchester silvertips. Excellent ammo in every respect and accurate out of my M36. Seems to work very well in snubbies.
Six for sure...Uh, I mean Five. Five for sure..
I carry gold dots myself

Lord, Grant me a good sword and no need to use it.
The popular the +P lead SWC-HP round while effective from 3" & 4" barrels rarely expands from 1 7/8" barrels. Fortunately the SWC's sharp shoulder is still pretty effective at cutting tissue as it penetrates.
The Corbon 110gr +P Barnes all copper bullet and the Speer 135gr +P short barrel are better suited for the snub's 1 7/8" barrel. I'm currently carrying the Gold Dot Short Barrel load in my 442.

I use Nyclads for guns I don't choose to shoot +p in and LSWCHP for a lot of my +p guns. They don't always carry well in speedloaders though. The Gold Saber or the DPX, or any JHP with no exposed lead at the tip works and loads into the chamber better.
I keep emailing Federal to bring back the 125 and 158gr +p Nyclads.
Try not to screw up so bad they name the screw up after you. (Station 15 saying)
