Would you use fmj or hp for defence and general shooting. Would either have any advantages or disadvantages. Thanks for any and all comments.

FMJ for general shooting, as there is no reason to spend more for HPs. They also do quite well for defensive purposes. But for strictly defensive use, I'd be looking at the Hornady TAP or some of the Winchester LE loads, most of which I believe are soft points, not HP. My point here is to avoid the hollow points which are designed to blow up prairie dogs in favor of bullets made for use against human targets, which will offer a level of controlled expansion.

Agreed. FMJ for range, but HP/SP for defense.
Personally, my HD AR has 55gr Barnes TSX loaded.

I have my magazine loaded with m855 in the event of body armor or any sort of obstructions. Then again my ar-15 is not my primary HD weapon..
WW 64 gr power point ammo is hard to beat for civilian general purpose use. A load using the Nosler 60 gr partition is also a very good round. Either of these will expand creating devastating wounds and rapid bleed out in animals or criminals. So they are good for what ever type of "Varmit" you have to deal with.
