    Remington .357 mag 125g SJHP

Hi all. Does anyone know the difference between the Remington UMC L357M1 (SJHP) and the Express R357M1? They both are listed with the exact same ballistics info at the Remington web sight. Sent them email asking this, and they never responded. Seems the L357M1 has a slightly larger diameter hollow point cavity than the R357M1, and the casing is different, but can both be used for self defense ammo? Anyone use either for self defense ammo? For that matter same question for the 40 S&W L40SW2 and R40SW2.

    Many Thanks!

Remington's UMC line is their "value" line and their Express line is their next grade up ammunition line...akin to the difference between Winchester's USA, aka "white box" line and their Super X or Supreme lines.

I wouldn't hesistate using Remington UMC's 125 grain SJHP, except maybe at night; I'm not sure if the load uses flash suppressants in the powder....the cover of Massad Ayoob's book, "Stressfire" shows what happens when you touch off a 125 grain .357 Magnum round that does not have flash suppressants:

Holy Mackeral! That flash would blind eveyone for several minutes. Looks like that round comes with its own elctromagnetic pulse Many thanks for the input.

I had spoken to remington tech service about the umc loads. They save costs by eliminating the waterproof primer and the flash suppressant. The may also use a different, less costlier powder, which may or may not be dirtier. Same bullets and brass though.

Thanks, SoftPoint. Makes sense. Although I noticed the UMC bullet has a wider cavity (4mm, vs. the Express 3mm). I would have thought it would be the other way around. But like RandyTulsa2 said, I wouldn't want to be hit by either.
