Best Carry Ammo for Ruger LC9?

Question for the Forum: what is the best, defensive ammo for my Ruger LC9? My owner’s manual says “do not use +P ammo. “ Further, Ayoob says “ball ammo is infamous for its poor stopping power” and also, “full metal jacket 9mm horrendously over penetrates living tissue.”

Any recommendations for every-day defensive carry for a Ruger LC9?

You'll get many responses to this pandora's box of a question... :)

When I was researching defensive ammunition for my 9mm, I ultimately settled on the 124gr Federal HST.

I also have 147gr Federal HST that also function well, and there are plenty of options out there.

Although I carry .40 cal a buddy of mine has the LC9 & uses Federal HST & Speer Gold Dot. I'm not sure what the bullet weights are but probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 147 gr. Maybe one of those rounds are 124 gr. I tried calling him when I saw your post but I'm pretty sure he's out of town for a week.

I use both in .40 cal. at 180 gr (HST) & 165 gr (Gold Dot) & they feed, eject & shoot well in my Sigma. They're not cheap.

    Happy posting...

I have the same gun as you do Ruger LC9. Have to say I love it. For my everyday carry magazine I use Hornady critical defense. Box came with 25 cartridges and cost was about $25. yes it is about a dollar a cartridge but have to say before I bought them I did my research and have to say well worth the money...

I like heavy for caliber rounds, especially if the gun has a shorter barrel length. I recommend the 147gr Federal HST. I carry the +P variant in my Ruger SR9c.

I carried either Hornady critical defense, or Federal personal defense classic 147gr.
The 147gr in 9MM is not anywhere near the best SD load, but fed 100% and was extremely accurate out of my LC9.
The Critical defense is top tier PD ammo, but I had 3 fail to fire out of 2 boxes and I no longer trust it.
I love buffalo bore but the +p limitation aces LC9's out of that equation.
Try the DPX, I had no experience but if it runs in your gun its rep and numbers are hard to beat.

    Hornady Critical Defense 115gr FTX.

Not had a failure (ever, from what I can remember) but I can certainly see why C66 might have an issue...

I stopped using Hornady CD in my LC9 because the first round would hang on the feed ramp occasionally when releasing the slide to chamber the first round. Critical Defense are 115 gr in 9mm, and I also had the same issue occasionally with FMJ 115gr loads. I switched to 124gr loads and no longer have this issue.

Can't go wrong with either Hornady Critical Defense or Critical Duty. IMHO

I thought the owner's manual stated to limit the use of +P, not "do not use"? I practice with non +P ammo, but for EDC I use 124gr +P Gold Dot Short Barrel and tested it thoroughly before I trusted it for carry.

Edit: I just checked the manual and it states to limit use of +P and do not use +P+.

Note on +P Ammunition: Although the RUGER® LC9TM is capable of
functioning with 9mm +P ammunition, a steady diet of +P ammunition will
shorten the endurance life of the RUGER® LC9TM. You should never shoot
9mm +P+ ammunition in your RUGER® LC9TM. There are no SAAMI or CIP
pressure limits on 9mm +P+ and use of this ammunition could result in serious
    injury.
    Do not use “+P+” ammunition.
