Speer Gold Dot 38 Special +P 135 Grain Short Barrel Gel test

Prior to this test, I really didn't think you could do better than the Remington 38 Spec +P 158 Grain LSWCHP. It appears that Speer raised the performance bar. At least as seen in bare gel.

Nice job. I carry that round in my 642 and have for at least 5 years. I also like it in my speed strips - the JHP holds up better in the pocket than the FBI load 158gr +p LSWCHP rounds that are the alternate load.

That load is often called the NYPD .38 load, and has served NY and others around the nation very well.

Some guys think it's the ideal .38+P load.

Would have liked to see a side by side comparison with 158g LSWCHP.

Great minds think alike! It's coming. That was the other bullet in the gel block visible during the high speed footage. Sssshhhhh....don't tell anybody else.

Finished up the blog article. Added some pictures of this load vs the GD 125 and Rem 158. Good news is they all perform great in gel tests.

Does it cost a little more than LSWC?

Are you planning on testing it against a clothing barrier?

    Nice review
A real man loves his wife, and places his family as the most important thing in life. Nothing has brought me more peace and content in life than simply being a good husband and father.

I'm still trying to define my bullet stress test protocol. Once I have that down, I may come back to these three.

The standard is the 4 layers of denim. But I love your review!

I'm aware of the IWBA test standards. As a self-funded person without tax dollars or manufacturer money behind me, I tend to do my own thing. The last thing I want is to exactly replicate tests that other people are doing. I'd much rather create some alternate data points based on more practical test criteria to help plug the gaps in existing data. That's one of the reasons why most of my tests are done with short barrels.

    Glad you like the review!

I need to try some of that ammo. I use Remington Golden Sabre 125 gr. +P hollow points but I like the heavier bullet in the Speer.
