Temperature at which ammo cartridges explode.

I'm planning to buy a fire-resistant gun safe. There are different mfg. ratings, e.g. 30 minutes @ 1200F, 45 minutes @ 1550F, etc. I want to avoid ammo exploding during a fire, even if the length of time and temperature outside the safe exceeds the mfg rating.

Apparently ammo can explode at much lower temps. I recently read an article about a woman in FL who was injured when she was baking something in her oven. She didn't know that for some crazy reason her man had placed a loaded magazine in the appliance. The magazine melted. The oven didn't have a temp. gauge. She picked brass shrapnel out of her skin as she took the bus to the hospital.

Does anyone have info on the temperature at which ammo cartridges will explode? Would several boxes of exploding ammo be enough to penetrate the walls of a fire-resistant safe?

Read this, particularly page 5. It should alleviate some of your concerns.

...thanks for this highly informative post...now I must go and dry my eyes and somehow manage to stop this sobbing, before I go look for some ammo...

...seriously...this taught me that if I use a safe, I wouldn't keep the ammo in the same one as the guns...ammo can be replaced more easily than fine firearms...sometimes...

Remember that the one place that a cartridge can be truly dangerous if it cooks off is a round that is chambered in a firearm.

Then you are actually dealing with a fired projectile exactly as if you have pulled the trigger rather than just shrapnel from exploding brass.
