The article is anecdotal and doesn't have a lot of statistics about who is purchasing what, but my gut tells me he's right on the mark. However, you may find this thread that I started a few days ago interesting for the opinions of other DC.com members.

    Are you hoarding ammo?

Yeah, the article pretty much sums up what we have all expected. Speculators and gougers are propogating the existing problem.

But he didn't mention that a lot of people who have never owned guns are now getting into the market, further driving legitimate demand.

I think that is a very good point that some are not taking into consideration. I know for fact that LGS in my area have been hoarding ammo to attract new buyers. I went with a close friend recently to shop / search for his first handgun. The transaction went something like this.......

LGS : How can I help you ?

    Friend : I am looking for a Glock 19

LGS: We have a used 19 for $xxx and a NIB Gen 3 for $xxx.

Fast forward..... friend decides to go with the new gen 3. ......

LGS : We have a current special, if you buy a firearm you can purchase up to three boxes of ammo at the same time....

I wandered back over at this point and didnt hear all of the conversation... I saw ammo and asked if they had .40cal, the LGS responded they did.. I asked for three boxes and he told me their ammo was only for sale to gun buyers.

After seeing the angered look on my face my friend asked what was up and I explained to him how that was bad business practice, and that the 27 dollar asking price for 9mm was highway robbery. He actually put his gun down, told them to keep it , and that he refused to do business with anyone who had such poor business practices. He actually waited a few weeks and was able to get a NIB Gen 3 Glock 19 for almost a hundred bucks less.

By the way, just got a hold of 100 rds of .223 for $42.50! It's .223 and not 5.56 but a nice deal given today's climate.

And that's how we, as gun owners, fight pricing policies we disagree with: go elsewhere. It's all we've got.

And yet, in a period of extreme shortages, this tactic is about all the gun shops have got, too. More power to 'em, else they're going to be without sales for a long time ... and many will likely go under. It is what it is.

For the LGS's selling P-mags for $100 a pop, I'll be looking forward to them going under! Maybe we can all stop in for their going out of business sales. Supply and demand is one thing, out and out thievery is another. Just as we should have long memories for politicians that screw us, so too should we remember the businesses that screw us.

FWIW, Wal-mart gets hated on a lot but the last 9mm ammo I bought was from there. $21.00/100 for Federal FMJ just over a week ago. That's the same price I paid for 9mm ammo when Obama was still at Harvard.
