    Thanks for posting that.

A small snippet from the article

...In his note, Sabo stated that an “unscientific test” was performed on “a non-expired, NIJ 0101.05 Interim Standard Level II vest” and of 12 total rounds fired into the vest panel, six allegedly penetrated. Sabo stated further that an armor manufacturer tested it (in laboratory conditions) against a NIJ 0101.06 Standard Level II vest. The email said that the .06 vest stopped all of the 9mm ammunition, but “four out of eight rounds of USM4 .40 Cal penetrated the armor.
Sounds like some more testing is in order.

Hopefully, soft armor manufacturers are looking into this.

Seems like the old armor vs weapon war is still raging. Full body armor cast aside till finally nothing but a Brest plate. Then nothing, then helmet, then flak jacket, then ballistic vest, now vest being penetrated, soon thicker vest, just goes on and on. Design one to counter the other then redesign the other to counter the other. Makes my head hurt...maybe I'll wear a helmet.

Well, something to keep in mind is that penetration <> death, presuming the penetration is superficial enough to not reach vitals. Which is the point of such protection.

Though, I too would much prefer a vest of a given caliber to fully protect in 100% of cases to the level it claims to do. Who wouldn't.

As well, the likelihood of being shot by 12rds is pitifully small. Am not minimizing the discouraging results, in a vest claiming it would stop such things but showed that it couldn't. But it would be interesting to compare a whole range of test results to these, showing the probability of, say, 1-3 shots getting through.

I went to the police academy with some officers from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. We were setting around one afternoon and the topic of vests came up. One of the Wildlife Officers (we called them 'Possum Cops for fun) stated he never wore one. When someone asked why he stated, "they won't stop a deer rifle". Kind of put things in a perspective for us about the difference between the world they worked in and ours.

Still not a reason to not wear one, what happens when he makes a traffic stop and suspect pulls handgun and not that rifle ... Then he would wished he had wore that vest... Never go on duty with out it.... It could very well just save your life...

Oh I agree, and we all told him so. Still, those guys & gals encounter the exact opposite set of weapons regular beat cops face. The one that I always hated to think about was a compound bow. It would zip through our vest and do so quietly. Nasty way to punch out....
