Lake City M855 Green Tip or Standard FMJ

I am getting ready to pick up some ammo for an AR build I am doing. I don't see a lot of price difference between Green Tip and standard FMJ.

Other than the "cool factor," is there an advantage to using Green Tip?

Go with the fmj if you plan on doing any steel shooting.

If you end up shooting in an indoor range, many have restrictions on steel penetrator ammo.

The m855 will not penetrate a barrier in a shooting range or 1/2 in. armored steel target but most if not all ranges will have a hemorrhage with steel cored ammo. The M855 has been declassed as an armor penetrating round.

I have a over 1000 rounds of the M855 and sometimes shoot it my indoor range. They don't like it but tolerate it in small amounts

Go with non steel cored bullets hassle free.

Tnoutdoors9 has done some interesting tests with Green Tip ammo vs. various types of steel plates. Here's a few of them:

5.56 mm NATO "Green Tip" vs. 1/4" Steel at 200 Yards - YouTube

5.56mm NATO Green Tip: 200 Yd Accuracy and "Steel Punch" - YouTube

I seem to remember him commenting in some other similar video about what seemed to be wildly inaccurate shots out of 1/9 twist barrels while using similar 62 gr green tip but I can't find it at the moment (perhaps someone else can). Anyway, seems like Green Tip will go through the milder steels at short to moderate distances. I personally steer clear of the stuff just because virtually all indoors ranges won't allow it and I've encountered quite a few outdoors ranges that similarly don't want you shooting the stuff (often claiming the danger of "sparks" from steel plate strikes potentially being a fire hazard).

Most of the indoor ranges I use don't allow steel core either. I've fired several hundred rounds of it without issue though. And I've taken pigs with it. I usually buy M193 (or clones) for range use and I normally use plane old Winchester Power Points for hunting.

I use armored steel 1/2 inch and m855 just explodes and does not penetrate. However the is more danger of sparks from tracer ammo than
extended penetration M-855. The indoor range I shoot at has backstops rated for .50 cal. So M855 I really of little consequence.
