    What ammo for 40sw?

Picking up a brand new MP 40c here soon, to be honest Iv never been a fan of the caliber but through out the ammo crisis 357sig and 40 were the only rounds I could find on a regular basis, based on that I have decided to add the 40 to my list of guns and it will more than likely become my primary CCW weapon.

Having said that, I started looking at ammo for it a few minutes ago and am blown away at the options, from 135 to 180. I am a fan of the HST round and have found some in 155. Im curious what the thought on the best round for this weapon to be.

The firearm will be primary for both CCW but also home defense.

From my experience with the .40 S&W as a police officer, I have found they are generally more accurate with the 180 grain weights. This is quite common as to the fact that this was the original weight when the caliber was introduced and most companies develope their rifling around that weight. The lighter 155 and 165 grainers do develop more energy, but one needs to have a cautious eye with these loads. With the trend being toward bonded core bullets these lighter weight 40's can, and often do, over penetrate and exit felons. One shooting I know of personally ended with about 15 rounds being discharged. Of those 15 rounds over half perforated the body and exited.

I like, and have used, the 180 grain weights from Speer (Gold Dot), Remington (Golden Saber), and Winchester (Ranger). All were very accurate and performed well. I have yet to experiment with the Critical Defense or Critical Duty line from Hornady. However, from the testing and reviews I have seen they appear to perform very well indeed.

For SD ammo I use Federal HST in 180gr & Speer Gold Dot in 165gr (the only weight I could find during this ammo shortage). I also found a 20 round box of Hornady Critical Duty in 175gr which I haven't shot yet. Before I shoot it I want to make sure I can find some more because testing will burn off the whole box.

For range practice I use American Eagle JHP 165gr or Winchester White box JHP also in 165gr.

When ammo becomes more readily available I plan on using all 180gr loads for SD rounds. I agree with GhostMaker about the over penetration of lighter bullets from my research & from skilled shooters like him. I have yet to shoot my first civilian & have no personal experience, lol.

So you dont go broke during practice, your gun should handle steel cased, (like wolf brand), very well.

I like the 155 grain HST's. The 180's are also good. It is hard to find a "bad" 40 JHP.

X2. I've never had a problem with a .40 feeding anything, and it's powerful enough that just about any JHP will be effective.

Great feedback. The only HST I can find are the 155s, Gold dots are 165, not really familiar with the other brands.

good choice on caliber and gun. Glock and M&P are my 2 favorite pistols. im a big fan on the 40, i have 2 Glock 40s and have had 9mm and 45 but got rid of them cause i love the 40 cal round. i currently use 155gr speer gold dot LE, for my carry gun and nightstand HD gun. i plan on getting HST soon but i trust in GD LE. i also have hornady critical duty/defense, remington golden sabers, winchester pdx1 and have all those loaded in extra mags. i would pick between one or all of the 6 in any grain i mentioned, their all pretty good and will do what you want. heck if i had to i would carry FMJ without a worry or doubt.

I had my P229 loaded with Winchester Ranger 165gr or Speer Gold Dot 155gr, but all the 180gr recommendations have me doubting my choice . I guess it doesn't matter as I decided to run it with .357 SIG for now (125gr Gold Dots) .
