    Question regarding defensive ammo in 5.56 for my new AR.

    I'm new to ARs and have a bunch of 223 that I've used in my mini-14, but that was solely for plinking. Now that I have the AR I'd like to add some good defensive ammo to my collection. I currently have about 200 rounds of 40gr, about 200 rounds of 50 gr and about 250 rounds of 55 gr. My barrel is a 1:7 twist so I'm looking to add heavier
    ammo to my collection. Thanks...

    It's not a heavier bullet, but Hornady TAP is the good stuff.

    Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: 223 Rem :: 223 Rem 55 gr TAP® FPD™

    ETA:

    Here's the same thing but with a 75 grain bullet. I'm not sure how I didn't see this one earlier.

    Those 40 and 50 grain bullets aren't going to do well out of that fast of a twist; they'll do at home defense distances, but will likely have terrible accuracy at anything over 50 yards.

    I'd look for some heavyweight bullets using the Barnes TSX/TTSX all-copper HP's.
