I'm willing to bet most people on here are going to recommend trying one, or a few of the name brand defensive JHP ammo on the market and see what works in your gun. My shield likes Hornady Critical Duty, Golden Sabers, and Federal HSTs and they have all been tested so Ill carry whichever I have on hand. Your shield may be exactly like mine, or totally different, just see what works for you.

    Federal HST 147 GR
    or
Speer gold dot 124 gr short barrel

    In my opinion
Both shoot extremely well in my shield

Yep try out a few and see what you like . My fav is hornady CD unless I am wrong they have low flash powder and I like the idea of the tip hopefully better penetration. But some guns just like one kind of ammo and that is it .

My Shield chess up and spots out pretty much everything I feed it. I flip flop on Hornady CD in 135 gr +p or Speer Gold Dot in 124 gr. Right now and for the foreseeable future, I'm going with Speer Gold Dots. I think they will over penetrate less. Just my 2 cents. There are a lot of wiser folks on here than I...listen to them before this relative n00b. Choose wisely, be safe, & keep your powder dry.

Feed reliability you wont know until you shoot it in your gun. Lot of newer semi autos will feed about anything. Some are a bit finicky. Im lucky in that the two EDCs we have shoot anything and everything you stick in em.

I tend to stay with 124 gr+p in Hornady Speer mostly. But I dont worry if I have 115 grn Critical defense standard pressure either. I wouldnt fret much honestly if I was down to only FMJ though I know JHP is probably a little more effective.

My shield eats about anything but wwb (1 fte in 1000 rnds). I carry the 124 grn remington GS +p. For mine, standard pressure is 3/4 inch low at 10 yds but +p is POA.

Buy several boxes of different types. Try them. If they all feed reliably, take your pick. If one brand jams, exclude it.

Hornady Critcal Duty, Critical Defense, Remington Golden Sabers, Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST, various weights (I tend to go heavy if the load is available) - most all will do the job.

Thanks for the advice! I have some leftover Federal HST that I ran through today. Only put 40 rounds through but no jams and accurate. Going to try some Hornady CD later this week and see how that goes. I'll post back with results, but THANKS for pointing me in right direction.

If HST works stick with that. I think it is WAY better than the Hornaday ammo.

mine eats all shapes, ~3k rounds ( I reload) and SD is 124gr Golden Saber

    In a semi i favor the longest round that will function. lessens movement of the rounds in the magazine;
less potential to rattle and less of a gap to jump when stripped by the slide & chambered...which I feel aids reliability

I use Self-Defense ammo for carry; bullets that are NOT made for intermediate obstacles like 'duty-grade'.
Self Defense rounds are JHP with 'thinner' jackets for optimized expansion/penetration.
The ones that pass the FBI standard are certainly favored, in 9mm, 3 inch barrel, I know the:

Hornady XST Critical Defense and the Speer Gold Dot 124gr+P LE GDHP "for Short Barrel" have both passed the 4x 16 oz denim w 12-18in penetration standard. (FBI Standard)
IIRC, the Federal Premium, 'Personal Defense' 124gr Hyda Shok also passed, but I'd double check that one as well as the Winchester Supreme "Personal Defense" series.

I don't think the Federal 147 gr Hydra Shok passed the 'standard', but you can double check.
The Gold Dots are the only one that required +P, but they use a diff config bullet.
The Hornadys XST seem to have the most foolproof bullet shape for avoiding FTF issues.
