    .22LR ccw ammo? Strange question.

Ok if my wife wanted to carry her 22.lr pistol as a ccw, does it really matter the ammo? hollow point, or FMJ, I know there is not much stopping power, but a .22 can kill somone. plain and simple! No caliber arguments please.

Which .22lr cartridge would be best for personal defense? Thanks guys.
    I carry because I care.

I think my choice would be Stingers - which IIRC are HP anyways. I certainly myself would not choose solids - not because of penetration excess issues of course - but because IMO they will not do enough damage.

There used to be a Rem ''Yellow Jacket'' which was a hypersonic but no idea if they are still around.

I carry Quikshock in my ccw .22. Eley primed, and the bullet breaks into 3 parts and provides a larger wound channel. Usually use as a backup, but occasionally carry by itself for a short trip.

    Quickshok

Another recommendation for the Quickshok. Breaks apart even when I fired it in my NAA mini. Absolutely my first choice in the Walther P22 I sometimes keep as a car gun.

Another for Stingers that makes it 2 for 2. It does seem that every one is staying away from solids. I figured there would be at least one penatration guy chime in.

    22LR 60gr Aguila SSS Solid

I recently tried the above in my Beretta Bobcat. I find it accurate at 20 ft from the Bobcat and highly recommend it.

Ammo selection in .22 LR is EXTRA Important.

Go with any Highest Quality MATCH GRADE ammo that feeds perfectly in the handgun.

Ammo quality is all over the place in mass/bulk produced rimfire ammo. That is why "rate of misfire & hang fire" is always higher in RF than CF.

I am not saying that .22 LR is the greatest caliber to carry for self defense & I sure won't travel down that road right now but, do yourself a HUGE favor and buy some Professional/Competition Match Grade ammo because the quality control is much higher and the batch lots are smaller & more closely/tightly monitored. Just my personal opinion.

BTW: I've never had an Eley Match Grade rim~fire cartridge fail to detonate so I would choose Eley. I've shot thousands upon thousands of Eley.

Thank you guys so much! I will check into the best ammo possible for this gun that shoots and feeds perfectly. I know its not a great CCW gun, but right now im on a really tight budget and it will fire as a plinker. And OFCORSE i will make sure the wife is fully trained and confortable with the gun before she ever carries it and if she does carry then she will be trained for shot placement!

    Thanks again guys!

Yes Remington Yellow Jackets are still made... Personally I'd alternate Yellow Jackets (vicious shallow wound) and Stingers (penetration.) If you wanted to stick with Remington, then Vipers are basically Yellow Jackets with the a solid bullet...

The best performing .22lr round that I could find based on tests were the CCI velocitors which have almost identical energy output as a .380acp and penetrated 3 water jugs and stopped in the fourth. Expansion was .34 inches, which in my mind is pretty impressive. Links:

My vote goes to the CCI Velocitors as well...while I havent shot thousands, I have several hundred and have never had an issue..obviously test in your gun first, but if i had to use a .22lr, the Velocitors would be right up there

    + 1 for Stingers

I have carried them for over 10 years in my NAA Bug.

My initial answer would be Stingers, for that has been the most effective hunting round out of all my .22's that I've used in the past.

Now I read that a lot of you like the Velocitors. That's cool, because I just bought a shiltoad of them at Wal-Mart when they were clearing out some brands. I bought them for $1.25 per box (50). I cleaned their shelves for them! I just haven't had the chance to shoot any yet.

"Yellow Jackets" are still made. I shoot and hunt with them all the time. Bought a box of 550 (500 plus a bonus 50) the other day.
    Have fun shooting!
