how old is old for CCW ammo?

I've been thinking recently about my CCW ammo. I often rotate b/w my .40 and .45. I bought my .45 ammo over a year ago and my .40 ammo about 8 months ago.

I worry that if I ever need to use my CCW it might not fire because of the "old" ammo. But I don't know if this would be considered old.

Should I buy new CCW ammo?

Ammo of any type from a reputable maker will last a long long long time as long as it is stored correctly. I have shot ammo over 40 years old with no problems at all. That said, I recommend that you shoot it up, so that you can buy new SD ammo.

If you shoot up all that 'old' ammo it gives you an excuse to go to the gun shop for new ammo.

Ammo doesn't really go bad if you store it properly. However, you may want to avoid chambering the same round too many times.

One thing you DO have to watch out for is not so much the actual age of your carry ammunition but, sometimes the rounds that you crank into the barrel chamber and eject from same will get a bit dog eared and chewed up mostly from the extractor and sharp magazine feed lips and they should be set off to the side to just get shot up at a non critical moment.

I'm with the group here. Age isn't an issue unless you live under some very humid/wet conditions, then you might consider cycling the ammo.

I agree with what everyone has said. I can't say anything better.

    Thanks!

This stuff is good to know. I'd be pretty upset if my XD 40 blew up because of my carelessness. I'm headed up to PA for Xmas and I'm gonna make sure to get some new ammo for carrying

I'd rather spend a few dollars and keep my XD and perhaps save my life than destroy my gun or become a victim

I change my carry ammo once every year. I buy new ammo every year on my B-Day this way I don't forget when to do it. All other ammo is no big deal on age as long as you store it right.

If I was able to carry, it would no more than 6 months, as I would fire off that mag and replace it, since you need to practice you might as well use the older stuff up first.

I do carry a shotgun for bears, you must replace your ammo every season, shotgun ammo is not as robust as rifle/pistol ammo. With buckshot you will notice little white beads leaking out of the ammo, it is the packing material they put in to keep the buckshot from flopping around.
