I was talked into a box of 9mm HPR 124gr XTP JHPs when I was at my LGS this weekend and don't have any experience with it. Apparently the bullets are made by Hornady? Anyway, they seem a little bit shorter than my Golden Sabres and cost quite a bit less than anything else I've seen. Have you used it before and what did you think?
I been wanting to try the HP rounds.. My dealer had some FMJ 380 that I so far very much like they seem clean burning and the brass is some of the shiniest I have seen if that means anything .. I like the stuff so far and just got another box
Seeing this makes me want to try the HP stuff
Also nice is this is made in AZ just a few hours from me also what is nice is it claims to be low lead which is nice if your shooting indoors
The XTP bullet is indeed mad e by Hornady. Never heard of HPR, but my preferred 9mm carry load is the Hornady XTP 124gr JHP. I have used the same load to take a deer and various other critters at close range using my Brothers Hi-point carbine. The XTP bullet performed exceptionally well.
As Taurahe said, the XTP is a Hornady bullet. HPR is a newer, small company in Arizona. I've done a couple of tests on their ammo in .380, and I have a box of 9mm here to test as well. Don't know when I'll get to it, but it's on the list of things to be tested.
ShootingBull on YouTube, tested this round in the 2inch barrel of the small 380s. The xtp bullets all performed the best in this category. I run Hyper clean in my LCP
Xtreme terminal performance. One of my favorite handloading bullets. The other is a Nosler.
They could quit making the rest of them tomorrow as long as I still had those two to choose from, and I'd still be happy.
The HPR/HYPER CLEAN XTP are the ONLY rounds I have had problems with in my Kahr P380. This was during the break in period, but I had no issues with any other ammo during that initial break in. I have also used the Hornady Critical Defense FTX and the Precision One XTP without any issues. I haven't tried the HPR since the initial break in so can't state with absolute certainty whether it was the ammo or the gun. And then, there are certain ammo / pistol combinations that just don't seem to work, and it varies from gun to gun.
I recieved a 100 rds of XTP 230 gr they fed great in my ultra carry, loaded them with 6.4 gr unique. I have been using Hornady in most semis they feed extremely well.
I bought a box of HPR 380 XTP for our Bersa Thunder 380 and 380CC. I did a water jug test with the 3.3 inch Bersa 380CC through four layers of denim (old blue jeans) and got similar results to the video below.
The bullet had no deformation and except for the rifling and power marks looked like it was just pulled from the casing. I switched back to Federal Hydra-Shok for our 380 carry ammo.
The bullet does not appear to be bonded. Also, although I can find no chrono tests besides Hornady's claim, it appears that the expansion is highly velocity sensitive. The barrel yielded 100% expansion, but 4 water jugs couldn't do it. I wish we had a gel test to standardize results.
