    Unscientific test of .38 & .45

I did a very unscientific, but fun & informative, ammo test. I was curious to see how some of my prospective defensive rounds would do out of short barrel guns. I realize this is not the FBI 4 layers of denim into ballistics gel. So, take it for what it's worth...It's just fun experiment.

    I tested
    1) Federal 230 gr .45 HST out of a Kimber Ultra Carry
    2) Federal 125 gr .38 +P semi jacketed HP (38E) out of a Ruger LCR
    3) Remington 125 gr .38 +P semi jacketed HP out of a S&W 642 (This was something that my dad had. I'm not exactly sure what product # is)

We shot into milk jugs filled with water draped with a cotton shirt (2 layers). I figured a cotton T shirt is pretty common garb.

I had my doubts about how well any of them would expand, especially the 1 7/8" revolvers. But, I was fairly happy with this informal test.

Left to right - Remington .38 SJHP, Federal .38 SJHP, Federal .45 HST

I think I will do this test again with the same ammo and also my 9mm 124 & 147 gr HST.

Interesting! Thanks for the post. Boy that .45 sure did expand a lot more than the .38's....

    How far was the penetration?

    Good question G'man.

    HST's are wicked rounds.

I meant to make a note. But, I think the .45 went 4 jugs & the .38 5 jugs. I'll make sure I make a note if I do it again. I had tunnel vision on the expansion.

I picked HST a few years ago based upon a really good ballistic test I read.

Side note: I felt the Federal 125 +P was pretty manageable out of the LCR.

That .45's expansion hurts just looking at it. I'm happy to have a G30S as my daily carry piece.
