Smile testing the power behind some exotic shotgun loads

Hey guys. I got my hands on some exotic shotgun ammo. Today we tested the 12 gauge bolo round.

    What's a bolo round?

The bolo round is a 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge shell that fires an unconventional projectile. Instead of your standard shot, the bolo fires two lead balls connected by a steel wire. Once the bolo leaves the wadding, it rotates and tears into the target. The chain is meant to create a massive wound cavity.

    Results

The bolo round created a gaping 1.7 inch permanent cavity that stretched out the 4 inch mark. At the 4 inch mark the chain seems to have snapped. This created two separate cavities that ran parallel until the 16 inch mark. Both pieces of the bolo penetrated the entire block. The wadding penetrated an impressive 15 1/2 inches.

    Overall Impressions

The bolo was a fun round to shoot. At roughly $5 a round, I would not recommend this round for self defense. I've had several experiences with this ammunition and each time the chain seems to have failed. Overall the bolo round is a great novelty round and not much more.

Well said - Hard to find any buckshot round out of a 12 ga that isn't going to be devastating.

Folks biggest problem will be putting it on target. I've missed a coyote at 15 ft with the mighty 12 ga. He ran off.

What? You mean you actually have to aim a shotgun?

We just tested Rhodesian today. It was quite effective, but we had some issues with accuracy. At around ten feet we had a 6 inch spread.
