Good defense ammo for .454 casull + .45 long colt

    Hello,

I am looking for some good defense ammo for my revolver in the calibers of .454 casull and .45 long colt.

This gun will be used for home defense and concealed carry.

Any recommendations on good ammo for this particular use would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

Can't really help you, My .45 Colt only shoots Cowboy loads. I do know that the make Hollow points for them I just don't know any commerical manufacture off the top of my head.

Unless you're defending your home against a herd of rampaging buffalo I would think anything in .454 would do the trick. :)

I have some 250gr. LFN cowboy loads myself. Are those sufficient for self-defense?

    Thanks

My fave load for .454 is the Hornady 300 grain - it is however very hot .... it throws an XTP with ME of about IIRC 1800 ft lbs. IMO this would be very excessive for SD.

There is tho a Win 240 grain load - labelled .454 but actually about half the power - much more like a .45LC load IMO. Forget bullet right now but it's JHP anyways.

I do think a .45LC load that approximated a .44 spl, with a 230 or so JHP would be well useful and manageable. More practical.

Oboy are your ears going to ring with the 454. I think the 454 would be a little on the over kill side and just might take out your neighbor. I would lean towards ammo for the 45 long colt.

I was thinking the same thing. If you hit it with a .454 and it does not fall or gets back up then you have a big problem.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft!

    .454

My instinct is that any of the .454 or .45 colt "hunting" type stuff is just too much penetration if you aren't engaging Sumo wrestlers. There are plenty of hard cast lead rounds, bonded Copper stuff, XTP's and stuff like that. If it was me I'd try something like the Cor Bon .45 +p:

Conventional bullet, but plenty of power.
I'm a new big fan of Double Tap too, but it all just looks like it's more for deep penetrating and just too much for defense against people. At least, if you miss, the BG will be on fire and the getaway driver will be deaf or blind, right?

.454 for self defense? Bah. One round and you're going to be deaf and blind... if you even hit your target, the round will almost certainly overpenetrate and may hit someone else downrange.

Multiple well-placed .40/.45/9mm/.357/etc. rounds are going to serve you significantly better than one .454 round.

Ive reloaded for the 454 several years and it is overkill for self defense against people. But if you must, I would go with the magsafe frangible's. They make a 45LC load in a 96 GR. 1700FPS/615 FT LBS load. Anything else in 454 will likely go through the bad guy and kill a volkswagon in the next county! I have loaded some 240gr. hornady XTP's to 2100fps and they are nasty!!

Most commercial 45 colt ammo on sale today is either cowboy action or hunting ammo. The hunting ammo runs the risk of going completely through a normal person and moving on to other possible mischief. Are you close to neighbors?

As a self defense load, the Cor Bon JHP may be your best choice. It's not cheap, but you are worth it.
