    7.62x54R cracks in cases

So to go with my new M44 I bought a couple hundred rounds of cheap 147gr. surplus ball ammo. The kind that comes in the paper packs of 10 with the twine.

Anyways, upon opening the paper I have discovered a few rounds that have cracks running down the neck of the casing. None have made it so loose that the bullet has fallen out, but a couple are close.

I'm thinking I probably shouldn't fire off the cracked cases. I'll prolly go through all the ammo I bought and find out how many are like that and dispose of all of them properly.

Anyone else had this problem with surplus 7.62x54R?

Yea..its not uuncommon with 8MM ammo either.

Since most of its Berdan primed, I just go ahead and shoot it.

I got 600 rounds of 7.62x54r ammo once for 40.00 bucks...in stripper clips in the ammo carriers. About one out of every 5 was cracked. Although its not the best for accuracy, they all shot with no problems.

Yep - not uncommon ... but hey - have a peek at this case!!!

It looked fine before use but after!!! Another matter entirely Methinks - slight (sic) lack of steel ductility!!!

I have had few bad cases with 8mm but for sure, some 54R can be rough stuff!

That crack is much more substantial than any in my cases.

So pretty much the attitude is "It was made by some little old lady in the Eastern Bloc who then tied the pretty little twine on it so it could sit somewhere for 50 years until you bought it at dirt cheap," so a few cracks are not at all uncommon, and should be fine to fire out of a Mosin, its not like I'll be going for match accuracy anyways.

Sounds like you made a trip to aimsurplus Buckeye...lol. You'd be surprised how accurate an M44 can be with milsurp ammo and of course the bayonet extended. I've seen a few cracked cases, but not very many, did you buy the ammo in the tin, or loose in the paper? I find that if you buy it in a sealed tin, you get less click-bangs,cracked cases, and general malfunctions. Of the last 3 tins I have bought, I have not had one bad round.

The older that Eastern bloc milsurp stuff is, the more likely you are to have cracked cases (or loose crimps).

Be careful, but a minor crack isn't going to hurt a Mosin- be sure to compare the 'before" and the "after", too.

The stuff will shoot better (accurate) than you think, too.
