FYI: Hornady match ammo self destructing

I was doing some inventory on my ammo today. I opened a box of Hornady Match Grade .308 ammo. I have probably had it in storage for about 6 years. It is stored in the same place as the rest of my ammo, in a locked steel cabinet indoors.

The cases are bleeding green. They look like they have acid on them just below the neck. Some are actually bubbling green ooze. There is also a green ring of corrosion where the bullet is crimped in the casing.

I can't imagine the cause, my other ammo is all fine. Luckily I only had one partial box of this stuff, since my rifle doesn't shoot it accurately.

Anyway, if your storing any of this ammo, you better check it. Maybe it has something to do with the brass lot or powder?

All I can think of is propellant degeneration ........... somehow it might be some bad batch with shorter shelf life and if the decomposition has released nitrates then that could effectively be like HNO3 on brass ..... corrosion and green discoloration.

True - worth checking long term stored ammo but I'd think this was a very remote incidence indeed.

Me too Chris. Like I said, all my other ammo is fine. Heck i have some old paper shotshells and some 30-30 ammo that is probably 40 years old. I have never seen corrosion like this.

But I figured some other members might have some on hand and need to check it in case it was a bad batch.

Send a couple rounds back to the manufacturer and see what they have to say? Perhaps a phone call to them would reveal something also.

Interesting thought Randy. I'll have to go dig them out of the garbage and maybe I can mail them in to Hornady.
