About an inch..... J/k , I think alot depends on the load. Some makers specifically make short barrel loads. Obviously some velocity is lost in a shorter barrel with standard loads.

I'd always say - not enough to matter!! In theory maybe 25 or so fps. Once you get under 4" IMO then losses become a tad more measurable.

With revo's 4" is often regarded as about the ideal, with not a whole lotta benefit from 6". That said for range guns I do rather like long tubes

5" is and always has been a std for semi's and tests.

Some friends and I tested this out with chronograph about 8 months ago. I was looking at the XD but never really considered a .45 with less than a 4" barrel before then. The difference from six 1911's (3=4", 3=5") was an avg of a 70 FPS loss. We also tested out my buddies two XD's (.45 service and .45 tactical). The avg loss with the same loads tested in the 1911's was only 35 FPS. Why the difference? I have no idea.

Just as a side note, we also bench rested each gun at 25 yards. Results for the avg of 5 five shot groups for each gun was:

    1.Springfield Micro-compact - 3.75"

    2.(2cnd) Micro-compact - 4.38"

    3.Colt Officer's ACP (actually 3.5") - 4.89"
    now the 5" guns
    4.S&W 1911PD - 1.89"

    5.Kimber custom - 3.25"

    6.Springfiels loaded - 2.89"
    now the XD's
    1.XD .45 ACP service - 2.00"(!!!)

    2.XD .45 ACP tactical - 2.38"

That was when I decided the XD .45ACP service model was for me.

The loads used were all 230gr FMJ from:
    Magtech
    PMC
    Winchester
    Remington

I would not have believed some of the results if I hadn't been there!

At 7 yards it's really tuff to tell the differance!
    ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!

Sorry. I looked at my shooting log and it was 5 months ago. Time sure does fly. It was in January. I got my service .45 in Feb.
