for the sake of argument consider the shotgun to be a 20" moss 590 9+1 and typical household range 10 -1 5 feet must be wife friendly recoil if possible

I have 2 3/4 "reduced recoil" SWAT 00 Buck by Estate loaded up in my own Mossberg 590A1. This is a fairly heavy gun and matched with this load it makes for VERY mild recoiling rig. My wife, who is quite recoil sensitive, said she didnt mind shooting it one bit.

Low Recoil
For great patterns and low recoil try the Federal "Flite Control" OO buck low recoil load. The stock # is PFC 154, same stock number as the full power load, so you must specify low recoil. The patterns are great, even from short barrel riot guns. Second choice is Federal's H132 OO buck load. Low recoil and very good patterns. Both function my Benelli M1. Everybody makes a low recoil load, but these use hard, plated, and buffered shot and specialty wads to keep tight patterns. Some of the cheaper stuff uses plain lead shot and birdshot or cardboard wads that shoot poorly or give erratic patterns. Some are low brass loads that cycle poorly in semis, if you go to one function check it first.

Any 00 buck that you know will go "bang" will be sufficient, but IIRC Hornady's TAP 00 prints the tightest pattern.

I like federal tactical reduced recoil 00 buck myself.
It's really just the same thing as the flite control reduced recoil 00 buck if that is easier for you to find though...

00 Buck is great, but there is better.

#1 Buck is the way to go.
n our opinion, this load is superior to 00 buck for selection as a tactical shotgun load. While exhibiting slightly less penetration, overall penetration is still acceptable and if all pellets strike their intended target there is potential to create approximately 77% more wound tract with the additional 7 pellets

I've got Winchester Ranger reduced recoil 00 buckshot. You might consider 4 buck depending who else is in the house.

Chooie, you are correct, the Hornady Tap 00 buck has been shown to hold the tightest pattern. My Mossberg is loaded with them.

Winchester reduced recoil 00 buck. The reduced recoil shells are great. They are the only way that I can get my wife to shoot a shotty. They are also very fast for follow up shots (and a little easier on the shoulder).

I have reduced recoil #1 and #4 buck. I want the extra pellets while avoiding too much penatration.......others in my house to think about if have to bring a shotgun (or any firearm) into a fight. 00 buck would go through a lot more in my house than a low brass, lesser buckshot would. I've hunted whitetail with both loads in very heavy brush so I know either load will do the job on a BG. in the close confines of my home.
