I believe it could be to differentiate the 3 versions of Gold Dot: GD Personal Protection, GD Short Barrelled Personal Protection, and GD Hunting Ammo.

Seems to me that it's pretty well explained on Speer's web site.

...where it does indeed make a difference. I use Speer Gold Dot SB 135gr +P in my S&W 442. Even though it kicks harder, I believe the increased velocity makes the rounds more accurate. My groupings are improved with this round.

I use the 124+p 9mm in my kahr, it really wakes the gun up and shoots to POA.

    SB gold dots

My choice for carry loads in my 3" Taurus 605. The high power (158 gr) loads kick like a rented mule. I haven't tried the 135 gr loads in +p; I assume I would be back in rough recoil land.

But I do like the short barrel gold dot... I feel confident with it.
