.357 Mag 180gr Winchester Black Talons

Friend of mine gave me 5 rounds to load up in my new SP101. Was wondering how these would fare using the 2.25" barrel. In other words would the rounds open up (expand)? Can I carry these as a defensive round?

    Thanks,
    Dave

I doubt the barrel length is too big of a deal - expansion is probably more dependent on other variables, such as distance and clothing on the target.

AFAIK these are viable SD carry rounds tho am not sure quite how they are regarded these days in the legal world - instance having to use them. I'd suggest a more ''regular'' round choice for carry, my own choice being a Gold Dot option.

I am in no way an expert, but I think the black talon 180 gr load in 357 is hunting ammunition. If that is right, I would worry about muzzle blast ( it is designed for a longish barrel) and maybe over-penetration? I think for defense most people use the 125 gr jhp or 158, something like that.

I believe they are marketed as hunting ammunition, but if it will kill a whitetail chances are good it will work well on ballistic gelatin too. You might find a need to adjust your point of aim using heavy bullets like that in a snubby.

    I agree.

An issue avoided...is an issue avoided.

That's one reason I went to HST instead of Ranger Talon - I get almost the same results with one less issue in the aftermath should one come to pass.

I must admit that after viewing the write up in Brassfetcher the Black Talon is impressive but as other have reported that there are other viable SD rounds e.g. Gold Dot that probably would prove more acceptable.
