What 12 gauge ammo to hoard?

I just got my first shotgun and now I need to start stocking up ammo for it. I already plan on getting a good supply of defensive OO buck like the TAP or Ranger. I just don't know what cheaper stuff would be good to start getting in larger quantities. What size shot? What brand? Get some slugs too? What kind?

Oh, I have a Benelli M4 if that helps.

    Thanks.

    get the tactical fed

    http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_s...roduct227.html

    LE13200
Federal police tactical buckshot LE12700, 00 2-3/4" load. For the fans of the low-recoil 12700 load, Federal still lists it on their website, but they are not producing the load. This load came out for a while as the LE132. It is now listed as LE127, but with a muzzle velocity of 1325 fps with the "Flitecontrol Wad".

OKay. That is another choice to look at for premium SD ammo. Thanks!

But what cheaper stuff would be a good choice for getting and saving in larger quantities?

Fiocchi 00 Buck here...200 rounds on shelf for Stoeger (reworked) coach gun...works as a HD back-up for me.

I like to have a good mix of ammo for shotguns. In a SHTF situation, the shotgun is the work horse. With the right ammo, it can do it all.
It can hunt or defend. It can hunt large game or small game.
For those reasons, I keep slugs on hand, 00 buck and tons of bird shot. I dont think it really matters what brand as long as its decent for shtf.
I've found that the value pack deal at WalMart is the cheapest way to have lots of bird shot. Sure, there is better out there, but I dont think it will have any trouble taking a rabbit, squirrel or chasing off some looters.

I like the Hornady TAP self defense loads in 00 buck loaded in the tube and on the side saddle of my shotgun.

I also have a mix of 00 buck; No. 1 Buck; and Slugs carried on a 56 round bandoleer next to my Mossberg 590 which is loaded with 00 Buck.

I also have a "sidesaddle" mounted to the receiver with 00 and a "eagle industries" strap-on buttstock carrier with 6 slugs on the weapon.

Most of my shotgun ammo is Federal. The Hornady TAP loads are in the gun and in the side saddle on the receiver.

I also have several boxes of shotgun rounds still in boxes that include hunting loads for birds and small game as well as more defense loads. I also keep close to 100 slug rounds on hand.

(I also have some 20 ga. rounds for my Baretta single shot break open)

    Stockpile

Stockpile whatever you can afford for SHTF purposes. If the S hits the F, probably quantity will be more important than if you have Wolf or S&B buckshot. As for me, I love that Flitecontrol Federal stuff. My serious shotgun is loaded with the low recoil PFC154 load. (civilain version of the Tactical load). I have some GI ammo cans full of an assortment of buck, slugs, and birdshot, even some "screamers". I also have some of the old GI cloth bandoleers and the pockets are the perfect size to hold a five round box of buckshot. For those I have Flitecontrol buck and Truball slugs.

I bought the Remington 00 Buck Magnum from Wal-Mart. I haven't shot it yet but I am thinking I probably won't want to shoot it much. If a SD situation arises, I really won't care about what I like nearly, only what I need and I have a feeling the magnum loads will be just what the Mossberg Ordered.

I have 150 rounds of Remington reduced-recoil 8-pellet 00 buck. It patterns well in my guns, and was pretty cheap when I bought it.

When it comes right down brass tacks, I doubt it is going to matter whether you are shooting cheap shotgun ammo vs. expensive.

I try to keep as much shottie ammo of any sort on hand as I can afford.
