I just bought some 230 gr. Hydrashocks for my 1911A1, and I noticed the casings look like they have an indentation. Is this to prevent bullet setback? I hadn't notice it on any other of my defensive ammo.

It's called a cannelure.
What is the general opinion of the HydraShocks? I have a box of them but haven't tried them out. Are they a good SD round?
Yes that what I shoot and carry in my .45's. They feed well and have a good street reputation.

I tend to carry Hydra-Shoks in all of my pistols, but in my revolvers I usually carry something else.

I've got a bunch of the HydraShoks stockpiled, but I basicly use them as back-ups to the Federal Tactical Bonded and Federal HSTs that I use as my carry ammo.
I have 3 boxes in 9mm, a LEO friend gave to me, they work fine in all of my guns, but I normally carry the Remington green box JHP as I can get them easily.
After experimenting several years ago with many different loads and different "stopping" media (Everything from Jello to wet newsprint), I was pleased with the results I had with Hydra-Shoks. Some of the other rounds either tumbled around in the Jello, or didn't expand in the newsprint.
Now my experiments weren't nearly as scientific as others, and not nearly as articulate as Box-O-Truth, but after what I saw, I know there are loads that I would not carry, and others that I would. HS is right there at the top of the list of loads that I would carry.
