It is a designation for cartridges loaded to higher pressures than standard pressure. In 9mm + P max is 38,500 PSI. It gives a higher velocity and thus more energy on the same sized bullet. Caution though, some guns are not recommended for +P ammo.

Anyone know how a Smith & Wesson 5609 (9mm) would do with +p ammo?

Just fine. I used to own one and I e-mailed S&W with the same question. Their answer was it was ok but extended use would accelerate wear and tear. Somewhat a standard answer.

As stated in the linked article remember also that there IS a difference between the +P designation and the +P+ designation.
    They are not the same.

If this helps. I found this info true regardless of which model S&W I looked up.
