    Kel-Tec p-3AT Ammo

With concerns for reliability of feed and penetration, what 380 ammo do you carry in your Kel-Tec p-3AT for self protection?

I've shot a total of over 850 rounds of 6 manufacturers thru my second gen P3.

Not one hiccup of any kind ... but I did a Fluff and Buff after the first 100 and a ramp job to eliminate minor smilies.

CorBon DPX is espensive and considered the most effective HP by most ... but at a buck a round?

I carry Speer Gold Dot HP and/or Federal American Eagle solids .. believe there is slightly hotter stuff out there but these are currently my loads.

If I recall correctly penetration is approx 9-10 " for The Speer and about 13 for the American Eagles.

    KT

Mine's a .32, but a couple of my fellow gunshop employees have .380s and each one has 102gr Gold Saber in theirs.

I started with Hornaday 95gr but switched to Federal Hydra-shock low recoil at 95gr. No feeding issues and pack a lot more of a punch but with a more mild of a recoil. Not cheep or easy to find.

I carry Golden Saber 102gr. Not for any great reason, just because its one of the larger mass bullets and it runs like silk through my gun.

On KTOG I would say, other than people like me that have a generally preferred hollowpoint, two other schools of thought. There are those that swear by the CorBon DPX round, and it does appear to have a lot more muzzle energy out of a P3-AT than most hollowpoints from tests I've seen. And there are those that feel that to have sufficient penetration, a .380 gun should only be shooting FMJ, and they often choose Federal American Eagle for that purpose.

I have been using WWB FMJs with the truncated point, but am switching to Double Tap with 90g Gold Dots at 1000fps out of the short Keltec barrel. If I ever have to use the pistol in a serious situation, I want a hot load and a darn good bullet. Oh, and this load is NOT a +P.

I use a mix of Santa Barbara (non-expanding) and Remington Golden Saber (expanding).

Superhouse was out of Golden Sabers when I picked up my SD loads. I went with the Gold Dots instead.

Right now WWB truncated, but will soon be trying the Double Taps.

winchester fmj at this time in mine p3at. did the f&b and the gun will shoot anything. the hydro shock are good also. did some wet phone book tests of fmj, federal hydro, and golden saber. the fmj did the best, with federal next in ten inches of wet phone book.

Currently Corbon DPX, with FMJ for the second magazine. Though I think I'll be going back to FMJs since HPs don't have much penetration in this caliber.

I stagger every other round Corbon in the pipe then fmj, then another hp, then fmj, etc.

Thanks guys for all the advice

I also have a Walther PPKs and the Speer gold dot ammo jams in it. I know Speer makes a fine bullet, and Double Tap ballistics are alyssum but since Speer gold dot jams in the Walter it makes me leery to run Double Tap ammo in the Kel-Tek 380.

Per your advice, I just ordered

380 Auto Winchester Ranger Talon 95gr. HP
380 Auto Corbon DPX 80gr. HP

and I’ll take them to the range, and see which one the little Kel-Tek likes best

But I may order a box of the Double Tap for my Glock 9 mm’s. G17 and G19
