Trying to find a carry ammo (9mm)

Most stores locally carry Remington Green Box and Winchester Ranger... and thats about it.

I am a novice (at least I consdier myself one still) having shot perhaps 5000 rounds of 9mm

I don't want to go buying & shipping dozens of ammo types and in dozens of powers, so I could use some advice.

Here is where I am at:
    Gun - Sig P228
    Climate - Florida
    Useage - Self Defense

My agency issues 124gr Hydra-Shok for our P228/P229s, and they see world-wide use. The Hydra-Shok is a standard pressure round that has a good reputation. There are some newer designs that may offer slight advantages, and of course there are other weights out there, but I am very happy with the reliability and accuracy of this one, and it is a breeze to shoot from the P228. As a bonus the 124gr NATO ammo feels and prints almost exactly the same, so I can train with surplus/issue stuff.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

You didn't mention what Ranger ammunition your store carries. Is it the Ranger SXT? That's some quality SD ammo, and I'd have no problem trusting it, provided it functions well in your Sig.

IMO you're not going to have reliability problems with a Sig - so you can pretty much pick whatever ammo you think will be best. Generally a 120s weight 9mm bullet will have good performance, especially in a +P load. There are some threads here - I believe ccw9mm went through quite a bit of work to find the best carry load in 9mm for his gun. If you pick something that is from a reputable manufacturer (Cor-Bon, Federal, Winchester, Speer, etc..) you should be fine. Ordering ammo online is easy. I like HSTs for my .45, and I get them from Streichers for a good price.

It doesn't say SXT on the box... just a brown box with a police star on it.

SXT is good stuff like others have said! Go with it and make sure it functions 100% in your Sig.

gold dots +p Fed hydroshock or hst all in 124 weights are good No experience with the ranges but as mentioned they are considered first rank ammo. All will work for SD if you do your part and place them in COM

Actually, even with that kind of box it may not be the SXT. Winchester also makes a regular HP ammunition for LEO use. it is a lower quality and not near the SXT. to have the good stuff the box has to say RA9T or RA9TA.

The 147 grainer is my favorite carry round in my Kahr. The Kahr is not designed for the 127 gr +P+ according to their rep. However any +P is OK.
I have some 127 +P+ Ranger ammo, but I use it in my G26.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Try some Federal Tactical HST or Speer Gold Dots from:

    http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/

You are not going to find good 'carry ammo' at Walmart. That's for target practice only.

IMO based on my internet research and test firing in my SA XD9 SC, Federal HST 147grain is my SD choice. Good luck!
